iv never understood that about VR6's. i now have my third one in a space of one year and can honestly say that none of them have made sense to me. yes i love em and the 6 pot hype etc etc but never really experienced the TRUE THRILL of the VR6, i think i jhust buy bad batches lol.

would love to sit and experience someones standard one here to put my mind at ease too - gota clean the hall sender yet mind you but this didnt make a diff on my other 2 iv owned.

Answer is to race a bug eyed Scooby if it only pulls away from you SLOWLY (if at all) you've got a good'un. ;)

I raced a 5 door, brand spanking new Golf GTI a few months back, and stayed with that all the way along the ring road in Leeds. Or a 325i Coupe Beemer you should stay with or go by!

Of course, this should only be done on a track! ;)

I'm not surprised you kept up with a new Golf GTI... on paper (even with a DSG) they should have the same if not slower performance specs to a mildly tuned VR with 190-200bhp. The quoted 0-60 is 7.1 secs for a non-DSG, and 6.8-6.9 for a DSG version. The "standard" performance spec for an ODB2 golf (with the factory ~185bhp) does 7.0-7.1. With another 15-20bhp I can see that being improved upon with good gear changes.

The new bug eye scoobies have a much much less power to wait ratio than a VR. They will have good off the line acceleration but the VR would soon catch up with it down a long straight.

When you say you drive it hard... what oil temp do you let it reach before driving hard as this can make a very big difference to the life of the engine? There's a mate of mine at work with an Audi S3 (an X reg) and he canes it from cold to around 4k revs and his car sounds more ropey than my P-reg VR! The main thing with any sports car is to wait until it reaches normal oil temp before taking it over 3k revs.

Talking about how a good VR should be like I can't reliably say but I can tell you how my VR feels....

my car now pulls cleanly all the way from as low as 1500-2000 revs since having my chains all done and new clutch, all the way to the red line. Basically even if you are in 5th gear it should still pull from 2000 revs onwards. Before I had my chains done my car never did that. It is so much better. Far faster than most cars on the road. How many miles has your car done? If it is close to 100k miles and your car feels ropey it's well worth investing (approx 500-600) getting the chains done as it makes all the difference. Also during the process (if it is a good garage) they will ensure your timing is correct... which will have a huge difference to how your car feels. I recommend you clean the oil of the hall (cam) sensor and see if that makes a diff. Also (for free) take it down to a VR specialist who will hook your car up for free to VAG COM which should scan your ecu for any fault codes, to see if you have any faulty sensors.

Good luck mate.

the best way to see how well your car is perfoming is to book it in to a vw specialist with a rolling road,a couple of years back my car had a faulty hall sender switch and only had 135bhp on the rollers, after diagnosing hall sender and replacing 191bhp !lol

in response to jaysvr6 i did actually have a bit of road rage with a 325i bm not the brand new shape but around prob 96 97 year and the vr was slightly faster it all started when i went to pass him on a dual carridgeway as soon as i got past him he pulled behind me but i had to brake beacuse of the cars in front so i ended up with full beam in my mirrors at night and a bm up my rear anyway matey didnt like it 1 bit.
