rockabillydoghandler 0
Hi, I am a new member to this site, please bear with me if this question has been asked before, I am after your advice please. I have a 1994 Golf VR6 which I have owned almost a year, it is a 3 door model and has standard suspension which I will probably retain. It currently has 16" Volex 5 spoke alloys fitted by the last owner which are nice but do not "float my boat". I have been making some enquiries, and have decided on a set of BK Racing 299's (I know they will not be everyone's own choice, but I like them) According to the chaps I have spoken to at BK Racing, they assure me that 7.5 X 18's with 205x35x18 tyres will fit without modification. I would like to know if anyone else has fitted this size combination, or know of others who have taken this route, and have they encountered any problems such as arch modification etc. I am very aware that many favour 17" rims for the VR6, but I am keen to give the 18's a go if possible. Thanks in anticipation of your advice/views
kilokilla 0
with how soft standard vr suspension is id be very surprised if they dont rub when you are carrying passengers or any sort of load in the back mate.
mattverth 0
IMHO My advice - honestly - don't do it. Spend the money on suspension. It will cost a fraction of the cost of 18s and 35 profile rubber. The ride, handling, rubbing, crash and bang caused by the wheel and tyre combo, coupled with the pitch and wallow of the standard supension will be pretty much undriveable. I dont think you'd respect the views on this forum if we were not honest.
richievr 1
a mate of mine had 7.5 X 18 alloys on his mk3 (it was a 16v but should make no difference)....the front was just ok but the back rubbed...needed the arches rolling....
rockabillydoghandler 0
Thanks for your honest replies, very interesting, it is now obvious why 17"s are so popular. Perhaps 17"s with a new suspension setup would be the way forward and a lot easier, I don't have access to many vehicle specialists where I live. Great site and thanks again !lol
rockabillydoghandler 0
Sorry I forgot to ask, what suspension set do you suggest, not too low please thanks
petervr6 0
coilover suspension you can then set it to how high/low you want it 300-400 should get you a set i think.
purple highline monster 0
coilovers are best way forward mate, you can decide for yourself what height suits you and change it for different situations if you want in about an hour! 8x17`s are probably the wides rim size to use on a vr6 without arch mods, i have FK Highsport coilovers £380 from Venom motorsport, and RH ZW 1` 8 x 17 split rim alloys with 205 40 17 Toyo tyres (not cheap but nice imo ), its low but still has good arch and sump! clearance, it is comfortable and handles well. rockabillydoghandler 0
WoW what a nice motor mate, and thanks for the great advice I shall be giving this project some great thought. I haven't owned a VW for many years now, the last being a Scirocco GTI and a Mk2 Golf GTI back in 1992. I bought my VR6 last year on ebay of all places and it was a one mature lady owner from new and is pretty much mint with a full VAG history, I don't like the alloys though they are alright, I just think that larger alloys would improve the look of the car. I still don't understand how 17's with 40 profile tyres are less likely to rub than 18's with 35 profile tyres, I was always under the assumption that when you go up in wheel size, you downsize in tyre profile, this is obviously not the case. Thanks again for all the great advice !lol
matth76 1
PhoneHandler, if you're in Kent give The Phirm a call. They may be an hour's drive away but they are certainly "in the know" when it comes to the VR6, both engine and exterior mods. They are based in Surrey near Farnham. The Phirm are the garage that Performance VW magazine use. They are far cheaper than a VW main dealer and far far more experienced.Coilovers would seem the best option if you are getting large wheels to ensure you get the drop just right to suit the wheels. On top of the cost of the coilovers or suspension kit, budget at least £200 for fitting (which will include 4 wheel alignment / geometery / balancing and tracking / camber adjustment etc)... which is vital following a drop in suspension.Good luck.
