Knightmare Repair - advice/comment appreciated

Recommended Posts

My 96 VR6 practically broke down on Sunday in Birmingham with a horrendous knocking noise coming from the engine. Got it picked up by RAC and taken to a VW specialist.

Reported Verdict - Con Rod -Bearing turned round on crankshaft blocking lube hole and resulting on non-lubed mechanical damage to both. Replacement engine reportedly cheaper than repair!

Any advice would be appreciated on:

1) Is this just "one of those things"? I can't see how I could have avoided it....

2) What sort of cost would be reasonable for a VR6 enginer from a breakers yard, and for fitting?

3) Does getting a replacement engine affect resale value?

4) Will the car be the same with a new engine(in my mind I have the analogy of major knee surgery where the knee is never 100% again.....)

5) Based on 4) - should I be happy keeping the car for another couple of years? It has been well maintained and had no other major problems to date.

Any advice would be appreciated.

all valid questions but.... whats the car worth now without doing the work?? a lot less than what it would be worth with a replacement engine, minus the cost of the repairs.

As for what to do afterwards, some people may turn there noses up at a car thats on its second engine but as long as you know the replacement isnt badly damaged (e.g. front end crash damage) then its lower mileage so should be better then before...

as long as all is well, probably best keeping it for a while after as could be difficult to sell for a price you will be happy with!

Sorry to hear that m8

Not sure how it can be avoided really...if it had oil and gave know warning then your just unlucky i think!

Have know idea about the price, but if the engine is being sold with x many miles id want proof!

Some people may be put off the car if its on its second engine so don?t bother telling them!

I would look into a good 2.9 over a 2.8 if you have the option......not sure if the gear ratios are the same or if they have different size drive shafts though.......1.8t would be a headache to put in but very tuneable...The car should drive just as well with a replacement engine as long as its not a dog or not put in by a monkey!

As for the last questions its up to you really, but if it was me I?d keep the car and put the whole thing down to experience!

Cheers all. Have done a lot of ringing around today but even the 2.8s are thin on the ground.

Have given up being depressed(theres nothing I can do about it now) and am just going to have to bite the £1200 bullet, keep on enjoying the car and hope nothing major happens again(until I can afford an R32).
