I'm currently in the process of rebuilding a 2.8 engine for my mk2 project, it's getting a full cleanup, bores checked, new bearings, all new gaskets, oil pump, rebuilt head, there's also a few bits i'd like to do to the engine but not sure whether they're worthwhile. I'd like to lighten and balance the crank and flywheel but not sure of the effect it'll have with the vr engine, some ally pulleys been looking at the neuspeed ones, are there any others out there as these seem to be the only ones I can find on the net. How much stress can Big End bolts take on the vr, is it adviseable to put some uprated ones in as I have a view to supercharging the car sometime in the future. Any other worthwhile bits to do while I have the engine completely stripped down.

All input gratefully received as i'm relatively new to the vr engine,

Cheers

Bob

I'm just having mine re-built mate. The one thing I am having done is having it bored out to 2.9 and having forged pistons put in. The engine needed a rebore and it was only another £60 for oversized forged pistons ontop of standard ones.

Bores were £25 a bore whatever they were bored too so it was a no brainer realy.

Be advised, if you are going to lighten the flywheel it may run slighty rough at idle and can also loose speed on a long pull because the fly wheel doesn't carry as much centrifugal weight (it will rev alot more freely though).

Not sure what effect the crank work will do but if you are going to have it done you may as well knife edge it.

This is all big money machine shop work and i'd look into a complete new stroker crank with a longer throw (ABT maybe. I was very tempted by one off ebay a while ago but you need a head spacer) if you're going to spend the money then you can bore the baby out to 2.9 and have a nice long throw crank to take the capacity up to over 3.1 litre!!!

It's a nightmare deciding when to draw the line when the engine is in bits. I'd advise not to worry about the bolts as these will take a charger no problem.

Hope this helps..! ;)
