Inner CV Joint Removal - Triple Square Socket

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I experienced some serious steering wheel shaking on the way home from work last week.

Turning corners produced a (very) load clicking noise

Suspecting the outer cv joint we removed the rubber boot to have 2 ball bearing fall out!! The outer race half missing.

What tool is required to remove the inner cv joint from the gearbox?

I have searched the web and a triple square socket seems to be the way. (Also known as Internal serration, XZN bits)

They are similar to Torx bits but with 12 points instead of 6

What size (8mm??) is required and where can I get it from in the UK?

Cheers,

Steven Jenkins

I shattered my outer CV last week so i've just done this job!!

I used a T40 torx bit to do mine. Make sure you tap the bit in with a hammer, its less likely to round off.

I rounded one off!!! Used a dremel to cut most of the head away, then knocked it anti clockwise with a cold chisel, all sorted.

You might also find that the the outer cv is glued into the hub, especially if its the original one. If it is you'll need a press to pop it out.

Hope that helps

Steve

U do not have to remove the drive shaft to take the outer cv off if u relase the lower wishbone then pull the hub assembley forward u can get the cv out of the hub , the joint is a knock on and off afair . A few hard taps with a big hammer and bobs ur uncle one outer cv joint in ur hand . u might want a extra pair of hands just to hold the drive shaft . ps replace the little clip on the end of the shaft or ur cv will jump off the shaft .

If fits, it just doesn't have enough splines!!!!!

More to the point, the car was in bits and I wasn't putting it all back together again and pushing it back intot he lockup just to go and buy a bit when I had one that fitted!
