Why bother? No, seriously?!

Recommended Posts

I've owned a variety of performance cars, MR2, M3, various Gti's and now i've got a VR6. I like fast powerful cars, and have done since i started motor-racing at 6yrs old. What i don't understand is why people spend literally tens of thousands of pounds making their VR produce 350bhp?! Why not buy a M3 or TVR etc etc etc, then you've got a 'proper' performance car, that is easily re-sold, and you won't have lost thousands of pounds in trying to modify a car to do what a far cheaper car will do as standard. The reason i bought a VR is not to try and make it beat Evo's, its because i didn't want to turbo-charge a nova! Get my point? All opinions welcome! ?! ?! ?!

the suprise element is a bonus the look on ppls faces when they try and trounce u and lose is class even a lightly modded vr is good for around 200 bhp and thats not to bad plus i get emotionally attached to my car so id rather make it faster than buy another 1 imo

You can get a VR to produce 350bhp a lot cheaper than you can buy a TVR!

most people are on here because they love VR6s or dubs in general, some want the show others want more go... if you're happy with yours as standard and don't want to tune it then don't!

Totally agree!

I also like to have something that is individual - anyone can get an M3, TVR etc...... but they are run of the mill, you can make a golf far more individual than most cars out there - they all have there own personality imo. :D

Well I like dubs and have had a few, so the VR seemed like a natural progression. Had it over 4 years now, as if you like something why get rid of it. Have modified it to make it a little more personal to me and make it drive and sound a lot better. (Shrick)

I've had an EVO M3 conv. and to be honest I wasn't that impressed and for the price and hassle of it it was an easy choice to go back to the VR within a few weeks!

I'mn seriously tempted of late by an S3, but I know i'll want to mod it straight away, so thinking why not just stick with what I've got, which is a good package (reasonably nippy, cheapish to own and quite pleasing to the eye?)

Again these are all just my personal opinions, which is what makes the world go round!

I reckon you do have a point, i can see both sides of it.

At the end of the day i think it mostly comes down to do you want to go the usual route, and impress your average Mrs. Bloggs (ooooo... its a BMW), or be understated and different.

Not really convinced that you necessarily get more 'bang for your buck' by buying performance off the shelf rather than modify it though. Again.... just my opinion, feel free to disagree :)

i think its just a personal opinion thing... i bought my VR6 2 years ago, at the age of 22, straight from Uni. I could just afford to buy it and run it.... the choice was something cheaper Mk2 GTI etc and have cash to spend on it or a MK3 VR6....

and I`m really glad i got the VR6, it may be 100% standard but it goes better than anything else i can afford, gets me respect from other car buffs and it hasnt lost too much of its value...

if i had got a £2k Mk2 and spend £2k on it, it still would be worth what the VR6 is now and i dont think it would be as much fun.....

as for TVR performance, when i can afford that I`ll buy a TVR!

For me its about learning a skill and a demonstration of that skill - showing an understanding of a subject and being able to help others. For some people its body work, with me its mechanical.

Believe me, if I had a TVR, sooner or later it would have a supercharger kit fitted and would be kicking out 500bhp, instead of 350bhp, and I'd be answering questions about TVR's on a TVR forum......

But then you wouldn't eb able to come round a fix my VR so that would be a stupid idea.

And in answer to the original question, you could buy a nice VR6 and modify it to approaching 300bhp for about £7000. I can't think of any cars that would provide you with a better blend of performance, comfort, quality and image for that money.

Suprise Element.

I love seeing the faces of so called 'performance car' drivers when my scruffy old golf has just blown them out of the water!

My main reason for keeping the vr & not getting an RX7 twin turbo, the expresions when you pull away from them are classic. lmfao!!!

i was thinking about the 280 bh rx7 tt. even my mam was persuading me to sell the vr and part with £7000. but if i did buy one, id lower it, put alloys on, and maybe even kit it up. cos i love the car just would prefer it to be different. so its easier for me to spend £10000 on my £3000 vr6, than it is to spend the same on an rx7 for the same power, and probably a much more reliable car. (if i didnt keep breaking mine it would be...) so i see the point that was made, but im better off the way i am. plus, altho i wasnt into the dub scene before i got the golf. i am daft about it now. and am seriously thinking about a mk 1 karmann, jus so i can tweek it and have a nice little summer car. lol. money money money...

i have a mk.1 karmann if you're seriuosly thinking about it! needs a bit of tlc but would make a super summer car! just aint got the time or funds to finish it now, and its to small to be of practical use to me with a small child too! sorry to everyone for the small thread hijack!

imo your comments a little bit negative....if we all thought like you the vr world would be quiet a boring place....its all about individuality...... how many standard evo's bmw's do you see around...I know most of them in my area have been boyed up in some way... be it performance enhanced,or aesthetically changed......why not a vr:D :) ..................sorry if some one has already said this :D

i love the way the vr sounds and goes, however!tvr?run of the mill?????geastb????cos i see loads of tvr's on the roads round my way!!!!m3's granted.loads of them but tvr's???i suppose nobles are as common as muck too!!!!i know that if i had the money,i'd sooner have a tvr than a vr!!!however nice to drive a vr is!no offence meant by the way, just find that statement a bit hard to take in!

350bhp in a VR is perfectly usable as a day-to-day proposition - I can confirm that. Everyone whose been in my car has been surprised how refined it is - everyone expects 350bhp to be a right handful - it doesn't have to be. My ten pence??? You come into this world with nothing and leave with nothing except memories - so enjoy it while you can - you only get one chance at it!!

Just got to drive my mates elise. Its a fun car, and certainly quick off the mark, feels a bit like driving a roller skate.

But it didnt feel much faster than the VR tbh. He tried pulling round me on the dual carriageway but i floored it in 2nd and he wasn't getting round :)

A VR isnt the fastest thing on the road but as a whole package of comfort, build quality, performance and reliability, i really think it takes some beating.

Spending 5K on getting it up to 350bhp is seeming more and more like a good idea!

doing up a dub is all about an enthusiastic thing and a whole lot of fun....

basically i've owned my fair share of high performance cars and the best of them all was my C36 AMG wow wow wow what a car!! but what can you do to it to get more performance out of it, theres not much fun in that so i sold it brought a house and a vr, in which i'm having fun modding. but i have promised myself to buy a C43 AMG once i get married which will be at the end of this summer....but i will never part from my VR coz i also love it too much.

if were talking about why bother with a vr6, then also, why bother with a TVR? cos if you arent wanting to modify/personalise your car as a hobby, then why bother getting a performance car anyway, why not just get a standard bmw 318? theyre pretty nippy about town. but if your after a high performance machine, the £15,000 minimum for a TVR could buy and build a sorted vr6, to your taste/style/performance needs. so your getting a vehicle designed by you, not some engineer who knows how to make a fast car, but not how to style/tune to your taste. im babbling now, ill shut up.
