Wee tapping noise from engine

Hi recently ive noticed on my 1996 vr6 that when driving theres a strange ticking/tapping noise. I dont believe it is the timing chain as its silent when at 1200 rpm. The noise only kicks in at 4000rpm when the car lifts and the noise isnt very loud only like a shutter then it goes away as the car revs but its worrying me. Any Idea's what it could be? As well as this noticed the car oil is heating up to 100c on the wee digital clock normally was about 94 96 would these two things be related?

Tappets by the sound of it. All VR6 engines are noisy and tappety. Chains will be a background raspy noise as well as the tappet noise...so if you can only hear one noise it sounds more likely to just be noisy tappets...nothing to worry about. How many miles has your car done?

Sounds like it to me mate. I wouldn't worry about the oil either.

my vr was making strange tapping noises between 2000rpm and 4000 rpm. it turned out that the big end shells were crispy ducked! replaced them and shes back to normal! (didn't sound like a bottom end knock though)

But we dont have tappets we have hydraulic lifters :-#
