speed_freak 0
I have noticed that i have got a squealing noise coming from the drivers side of the engine however it is only on low revs upto maybe 2500 rpm after that you dont really hear it could it be the alternator belt or something else any ideas ????My car is1996 VR6 HIGHLINE WITH AIR CON
silverline 0
id say a bearing in one of the pulleys driven by the fan belt could be making the noise
speed_freak 0
anybody else any ideas or do you all think the same ?
vr200 0
sounds like either the water pump or the tensioner pully m8
speed_freak 0
is there anyway i will be able to tell which it is ?
vr200 0
just stand over it while the car is running and rev it while stood over the bonnet m8
spanky 0
I had the same thing last summer and it was the belt tensioner bearing that had gone. When i revved mine to see what it was loads of smoke came from the engine bay but it turned out it was just the untensioned belt slipping and on the pullies and burning the rubber off it. dellert 0
If its the tensioner read the post "Strangled Cat", which may help. Thats probably the cause, if not remove the belt and see which pulley feels out of sorts. ie. stiff excessive endplay or making gringing noises!
Ciaran 4
i have the same thing so guess what im doing when i get home!!!can u get a new bearing for the pulley/water pump wheel???

Ciaran 4
doh. just replaced the belt though when i did the power steering pump. would i be aswell doing the water pump while im their save hassle of doing it in the future????
spanky 0
If you've just changed the belt it should be good to go back on, as long as it's not warped from running on knacked pullies. as I mentioned mine was burning rubber off it so had to get a new one, as for the water pump if you have the money it may worth getting it done at the same time if it's getting old. I didn't get it done as my water pump is fairly new!
Ciaran 4
well i wouldn't be paying anyone to do the work id be doing it myself. may just replace the belt the tensioner and the pump at the same time
