does that mean that the manifold doesn't actually switch? If you look at the butterfly mechanism and rev it past 4K you can see the crescent shape metal pivot with the rod attach travel from it's resting point to a metal 'bump stop'. Does this mean it's not binding? If it is binding surely it wounldn't travel the full distance?

Dubloke, the flap mechanism is the bit that's warranted. The casting is a non-wear item so you get the same one back again - with a new flap. So polish away.

I picked my car up from Vince today and had a chat with him about it. The poor guy is not only under the weather, but he has a bunch of issues with Schrick AND SACHs with the dodgy clutches.

He managed to sort my flap (yes the Schrick one Evil, LOL!) but mine was one of 5 dodgy ones so far.

And yep, a UK based 3rd party has been contracted in to sort the repairs, so Schrick will be getting a big bill. Looking on the bright side, at least the dodgy Mannys don't have to go back to Germany, so reduces the delay consideably.

On a brighter note, Vince returned my car to me today complete with new head, chains and clutch (LUK this time, in place of the SACHS junk that juddered after a week's use) and the car is absolutely sublime. The top end is silent. All tapping has vanished. The bill was very reasonable and the car pulls like a train, so I'm a very happy man. I even gave him a box of cigars to show my appreciation as I am *that* happy with his work.

I can't plug Stealth enough at the moment.

You'll love it when it's on Dubloke!! I'm lucky enough to have the monster AMD throttle and remap too and there's torque everywhere! Don't what to do with it all, LOL!

MightyVR6, chains....I'm not too sure on the price for just those as mine were done as part of a clutch and head rebuild job. All of the chain parts come to about £200 - upper and lower guide rails, upper and lower tensioners, 1 x duplex upper chain, 1 x simplex lower chain and tensioner bolt.

Labour is about 7 - 8 hours I think but Stealth want the car for two days when doing chains.

You must take it to Stealth imo as it's VERY easy for people with little or no experience of the VR to set the cam timing a tooth out.

I went for a 1999 solid upper tensioner too, so it's a fit and forget for the life of the engine. Why VW didn't use solid polymer tensioner pads to begin with is a mystery.

mine sticks, see photos f3a5.jpg?phdiQsABsussD5gW As you can see I am pushing hard here 542d.jpg?phdiQsABpSuIcyP0 another of the flap. efbc.jpg?phdiQsABLum0na51 it gets to there, then seems to scrape on something inside. Then snaps around. You gotta suck bloody hard to get it to work. It might loosen up after abit of use???? Heres a few pictures of the damage on the mating face.... f2d0.jpg?phdiQsAB4UQm2AhZ another angle 621c.jpg?phdiQsABA.ml8M8e

so whats happening with these then? Vince will fix them when he fits them?? Found out if you push the flap around with your finger from inside, it works no problem, use the little rod end bar and it jams. Seems to be a discrepency with the vacum plunger thingy. Could be that bearing on the end of it, needs to come out a mm or so...... anyone know???
