VR6Lee 1
Friday nite coming home my VR miss fired ran 20 more miles like it. Mobile engineer came out to it yesterday, he rang me at work to tell me to sit down :-( . He told me I have major engine problems. 1. There was a lump missing from plug 2. 2. Loads of oil around the plugs which were new 2 weeks ago 3. Value guides are worn4. Suspects a dropped a piston? He told me the engine needs stripping, but not necessarily the problem is in the top engine could be in the bottom. Then when its stripped I could be told its no good need a new one.He told me he knows someone who could do it?Wot is best for me and my wallet to do:1. Pay to get the engine stripped to look for the problem.2. Order a new engine and save on the money getting the engine stripped down to be told its fucked.3. ? Ideas ? jaysVR6 2
Oh shite mate... Not good news. Have you seen the lump that's missing from the plug, has he shown it to you?Is the missfire intermitent or constant? Is the car smoking like mad?Is it making a knocking noise? How can it drop a piston without throwing a rod through the block and making a real mess of your bottom end? It can drop a valve but not a piston! But even that's rare on a VR lump!I'd like to hear the symptoms of the engine and what noise it's making before I can comment really. VR6Lee 1
Thanks JayIt was drinking lots of oil before........Is the missfire intermitent or constant? A: Deep putt putt noises if ya kno wot I mean only from the exhaustIs the car smoking like mad? A: No only when I accelerate. Is it making a knocking noise? A: No
guppers 0
i dont think its bottom end as the car would be knocking like mad otherwise. i would tear the head off to have a look at the valves. then if it is the valves maybe get a recon head????? :S
jaysVR6 2
Sounds like you may have dropped a valve. But this may not mean good news either as it could have smacked the top of a piston.Does the car tick over smoothly? If it does it wont be your bottom end as is sounds like the engine isn't breathing properly when needs to.You could of had something drop into a bore and impacted itself into a piston or if your REALLY unlucky, found it's way down the side of a piston and wrecked a bore, piston and rings (:s).I'm only giving some impartial advise mate, i'm no engineer but these sound like viable explinations. Russ_vr6 12
if its a valve dropped u could be lucky,we have quite alot of this at work,it needs a pretty big wack to crack a piston,so i would say get the head off it mate,u will be able to tell if there any piston damage with the head off, then u can decide what 2 do from there
VR6Lee 1
Thanks Jay Russ and Guppers.Hope its repairable.............If I do need an new engine?Who supplys new VR lumps?

VR6Lee 1
Well, well, well,For a start I am no mechanic,But I do have a mobile mechanic who I rely on for emergencies. After being informed by him as you all know by this threadmy VR had major engine problems.I took his word for it.....I looked around for a local garage and came across Clovers a VW & Audi garage in North Weald near Epping near me LOL.Dave & Ron from Clovers, They have just informed me that my car is ready (h) They put my VR on a diagnostic machine and 5 major faults came up.Couldn’t understand that as the car wouldn't not run Idle...They cancelled them all the faults just to see if they would come up again.Nothing came up; they changed the plugs, as the ones put in from last time by the mobile engineer were not good quality. They understand from the history of my VR that every time she has gone in for a service at VW Westway, even the mobile engineer has not reset the faults. They took him out for a good run and put it back on the diagnostics and 2 faults came up Engine Temperature and Throttle Body? They cancelled them took him for another run out then back on the diagnostics all clear out for another run for the all clear.Just needed good fucking plugs........ Thanks to everyone who answered my concerns its good toKnow you here to help. (I'm told he is running like a dream. (h) (h) Roll on the next meeting (h)Thanks again Jay, Russ & Guppers
