I have a totally standard VR6 (1997). The performance is adequate but sometimes i feel like the weight of the engine delays the rush of power.... like in some gears it seems to take a while for the engine to wake up. Guess thats just a nature of a 6 pot?

Anyway the engine is sound mechanically so i know its not suffering from any problems.

I want to start tuning it up but want some advice.

I'm not going to change the appearance of the car as to be honest they look pretty boring and in a way this adds to the sleath appeal of the engine.

I've heard a bit about the Shrick(?) i can add on, could someone who knows about these tell me what they are and how they work? (not in great detail though please!) Also what other simple mods can i make WHILST keeping the reliability!

Any pointers would be appreciated..

Oh i nearly forgot.... i only have £500 set aside for my budget!

a schrick variable inlet manifold is out of the question then as you will need 3 times that amount for one, they give good torque, about 20 lbs/ft and are a good mod to have though, the best route to go down is , a chip, i.e amd, superchip etc, and a decent exhaust, which should set you back about £500 , maybe slightly over, a decent cold air induction kit, bmc (£150)is also a good mod, suspension is also a must, even at a later date as that is a major weakness of a vr

Unfortunately VRs arent cheap to tune...for £500 you won't get a lot tbh...a cat back exhaust and induction kit will cost £350-£500 but dont expect big gains. A remap will set you back nearly that as well and on a 97 you probably wont get more than 5-10bhp.

If it feels sluggish in some gears... drop it down a gear or 2 that'll soon wake it up! seriously though the VR is a different beast if you keep it in the 4000rpm and above power band ;)

lol, not worth it in a standard car, but a lightened flywheel would spruce up the lower rev range, but at arounf £380 + fitting, its not gonna help you too much. would probably save up a little more and go for the exhaust/filter/chip route. and deffo suspension, cant shout that loud enough, lol.

Only problem with keeping the revs above 4000rpm is that the tank of petrol will only last 100 miles instead of the 190 its giving me at the moment!!

so wot you saying kobi an m3 not gonna be as juicy as a vr i cant see that meself mate.

nah, what he wants is a car that has good performance at low revs, so you don't have to rev the tits off it, and thus use lots of fuel, to go anywhere.

shame cars like that don't really exist anymore. :(

What i want is a quick reliable car, dont mind paying for petrol if i'm using the engine.

But dont want to be shelling out £40 just to get 190 miles out of the tank whilst driving like miss daisy! Also my mate has a BMW 330 CI AC Schnitzer and even that averages about 30mpg!

After my MK3 GTI i went out and bought a Volvo T5 (dont ask) and those things will blast the pants off a VR6 or almost any other car. I had 3 passengers once and a Boxster couldnt get past me on a dual carriage way (Andy - The one from Bray to the M4)... but the handling was shite and it was toooo big. But must admit it was one helluva motor :)

Yeeha... ur taking the p1ss?? I've had a Leon

Cupra R TDI 150BHP for a weekend from work and whilst they may be brilliant on mpg... they aint nothing on performance. These are the same engines found in the GOLF GT TDI. I always assumed they would be quick but i was disappointed. Definately didnt make me want to go out and get a diesel!

For a start mate, you aint used to driving s diesel - you need to get used to a totally different way of driving. Next, its only 150BHP yes, but EASILY tuned to a good tad over 200BHP, and something crazy like 300 lb/ft torque. We all know that in the real world torque is the daddy. OK, you might not keep up with an M3 top end or anything like that, but you'll EAT most things mid-range (and I mean you'll destroy them!) and all this with 50mpg? Oh, the added bonus is that you've also wiped the floor with some jumped up Paxo driver with his burd in the passenger seat laughing at him while he chokes on your burning oil..... lmfao

ugh we are back to the old petrol vs diesel debate again, i think quite simply if you want good low rev range performance, then a vr is the wrong car for you, unless you are gonna slap a supercharger or turbo on it (slightly over £500!!!!) , over 4000 revs they are very good which i like, mid range is where these babies come into life, i feel 2nd gear is good for the vr and the top end will see off a lot of turbo cars, if anybody with a turbo wants me a race , i either invite them onto a dual carriageway or motorway!! Thats proper racing, not going round 30mph hour backstreets like some of these saxo numptys

you sure it was a 150bhp version (remember theres 90bhp, 110bhp, 130bhp, and 150bhp versions of vag diesel engines), the 150bhp will deffo keep up with a vr6 until you get over 110mph on a motorway, the 130 keeps a vr6 honest...some mates have had them, gave me a right scare! lol

i do think the diesels are very good these days, but i can't bear the sound!

Wait until you hear the new Audi A8 V8 diesel used in anger then :o

Funny how the diesel engine was the first internal combustion engine and now it's going back to that again. Flares and cardigans will be fashionable again before we know it..... everything goes round in circles.....

lol @ kev...

In all honesty, I think diesel is gonna be king in a couple of years, and will remain so for a very long time. As acf said, the noise from most TDI's is still a big trun off for most (myself included) but they're getting quieter all the time, soon they'll be nearly as quiet as a petrol....... wouldnt mind hearing that A8 V8 kev!!!

It was a 150bhp Diesel. And the sound was dreadful.. didnt want to putmy foot down as i didnt want everyone walking down the street to turn round and look at the car that sounded like a tractor.

The curpra R i drove was only 6 months old. But even then.. it was run in and basically... i wasnt impressed... i think the VR6 is slightly overrated but no way would the Diesel embarras the VR6...except with MPG figures of course.
