goonersteve 0
I've been thinking about what to do with my currently un-modded VR and came to the conclusion that maybe a weight reduction would be better economically than souping up the engine. I imagine it would be a high initial outlay, but in the long-run surely it would give performance gains without the extra fuel, tyre wear, engine wear etc.?Does anyone have information on what can be done and what positives or negatives there are on doing this? Reason i ask is that it doesn't sem very popular and i've not heard anyone mention doing it or having it done on here.
thegoth 5
Hi Steve,My initial thoughts:The obvious free starter is stripping the inside. -ve makes it look tatty. The seats are pretty heavy, but can be useful!A carbon fibre bonnet costs £300-400. No idea about the weight saving. I have never seen any other light weight panels. Polycarb windows are light, but again, can ruin the looks and scratch easy.A De-cat is a mix of both schemes, gives a fraction more power and weighs alot less than a real Cat.Light weight engine parts count as engine mods.TG
Dekerf1996 27
I will be doing this, but not to my VR (because i put it up for sale last night)I have a mk2 Polo coupe to play with, and i will be trying to reduce weight as i don't have much money and you can't really do much to them without spending large money (well in relation to the cost of the car) I have figured slightly modified engine (do bike carbs count as slightly modified?? ) and losing as much weight as possible will make it a lot quicker. I am starting with losing unessential trim (but have to keep 4 seats for the baby) and getting some perspect windows made up. May even extent to losing the petrol tank as they are problematic on polos and getting a race one in its place

goonersteve 0
Cheers for the comments guys. I don't wanna completely strip it, because i still need it as a regular car (e.g. back seats for passengers!). But carbon fibre bonnet sounds gd. Does anybody know a gd company to go to for this? Russ_vr6 12
i doubt if u will notice the difference with jus a bonnet mate,my clio williams used to run 14.4 on the quarter mile , when i stripped the interior i got it down to 14.1,but that was all carpet out,bk seats out,all door + trim panels etc if that helps as a reference
goonersteve 0
Really? I wouldn't expect a huge difference, but if you only got that much difference in your time from doing all that, then maybe i'll give it a miss.I forgot to mention, this would eventually be as well as engine mods. If you reckon it aint worth it i'll just save my ££ for a charger next year! 8o|

If you reckon it aint worth it i'll just save my ££ for a charger next year! 8o| [/quote']it oes make a difference if u go all the way mate, and remember that also u will have less weight so the car will be more cuckable lol,oh and my terminal speed on the quarter went up from 14.4 @ 95 mph to 14.1@ 98 mphalso the guy who bought my clio stripped the dash out and the roof lining and put in poly windows and slicks and the quarter time went down to 13.8@ 101mph !!! goonersteve 0
Damn mate, that sounds like one quick car!But yeah as i said, i'm not interested in going the whole hog with the stripping. I'll just go for the lower weight stuff when fitting new parts, like the alloys Rix (cheers) suggested for example.
Russ_vr6 12
it was silly mate, use to hit the limiter in 5th from a standin start in half a minute lolwell y dont u take out ur bk seats n parcel shelf and go for a drive, see what difference it makes to handling too
