(6) I'm interested in an advice any owners can offer on good brake upgrades for the front discos on my 1993 VR6. I know that saying the stock brakes are not a patch on my Honda VTi won't make me any friends but sadly its true. Good disco upgrade for front stoppies needed! Ta. Nice. (6)

Depends on your driving style, and how deep your pockets are. As your car is a 1993, I assume that you'll have the 280mm disc fitted. I changed my VR6 280mm discs to the 288mm Tarox G88 40 grooved disc, and upgraded to the bigger and later caliper. I also changed the rear discs to Tarox 40 grooves, and fitted Tarox pads all the way round. The breaking is great for what it is, and is a huge improvement over what I had before. This suits my daily driving style.

If you wanting good breaks for track days etc. then upgrade to AP Racing, but you'll have to fit bigger rims etc. This will cost you.

Therefore you need to define your driving style as well as budget, and purchase accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

John

A set of 288mm front brakes from a 1996 onwards VR6 is the easiest upgrade you can do. You need the calipers and carriers from the donor car, plus a new set of performance discs and pads for the later model VR setup. Fit Goodridge brake hoses, replace your brake fluid and fit performance pads on the rear (and replace the rear discs too if they're worn) and you should notice a huge improvement in braking performance.

Beyond this, you can go for the 315mm (Audi TT 225 / Golf 4Motion) upgrade, which is a bit more involved and requires 16" wheels or bigger, the 345mm (Golf R32 / TT V6) setup which requires 17" wheels or bigger. Or you can go for an aftermarket 4-pot or 6-pot caliper setup, although these are expensive.

To be honest, the 288m VR6 setup is more than sufficient unless you're planning major engine mods (such as supercharging) or are planning to do track days.

Top advice from you all and I'm v. grateful. The thread from keyhaywire is worth following on this subject as he seems to go through each of the mods above in turn!! I'll look out for the 288mm VR6 set up the bay I guess or if any of you hear of a 1996+ VR6 being broken I'd like to know. Big question is what I do next! VR6 is being used for daily commuting which is silly (smiles per mile not miles per gallon!!) so I have to work out what next. Very tempted to get a turbo fitted and do subtle mods though I think that this VR6 has had ahard life at times so the engine feels a bit worn and I may be better off looking at basics. At the very least I'll get new discs fitted (pagids seem to be ok) and that should sort out the judder problemo. I'll keep you informed on my next moves and see if the VR6 becomes bye bye or beastie!! Chars
