:o :-( As some of you know my VR's sick +o( I found the problem! piston no1 is in pieces, No one i know or the mechanic or anyone from VW can tell me what has caused this??

So if anyone has a clue wtf has happened please let me know

coud have been allsorts really' date=' id look to a damaged injector first, or did tour chain let go, have you got any bent valves?

Mmmm my injectors all seem fine and the chain is fine she only has 60k on the clock, and all the valves are fine

Ooooops. Any news on when/if you are getting the work done Riggs? or is it in the process now if you've got the knacked piston out?

Yup im in the process BUT my mechanic is off on his hols tomorrow, so im still looking at a min of 3-4wks : (

How long have you had the car Riggs? Feel sorry for you man...what a f*cker! It could be that the previous owner never looked after the car and caned it from cold - normally takes at the very least 10 mins before the engine should be taken over 3000revs when oil has reached op temp (88-90deg). Could be any number of things though that has caused this. As said above long term pinking (which can go un-noticed unless on a rolling road) could have caused this or even worse - detonation but this is rare unless its supercharged and badly mapped. Was your car chipped or modded in any way?

Yup the car was chipped and remapped and r/roaded in March of this year, but she ran fine. The previous owner was a lady and the car has full vwsh and 60k. The mechanic has also commented on the engine saying "It's internally the best/cleanest one he has seen in a long time". Neither himself or the other two independant inspectors that have both viewed the car for over a hour can conclude what the problem was that caused this? All the valves seem fine and the injectors seem fine too.I never drive her hard until well over 20mins after starting, i do drive her hard on occasions but nothing excessive really, so this has me completely baffled!?

Does sound odd. Where did you get it mapped? Was it a superchip or a full custom remap? Although if it was mapped and rolling roaded at the same time then that should be fine. There could have been a problem in its service history with the previous owner that was initially fixed but left some metal fatigue or stressed the internals in some way...but the part finally gave way now.

I really don't know what/how? :-*It was mapped/r/roaded at the same time and place I just cannot afford or be doing with this cack at the min :-(

Things are generally cack atm, and this is just the icing on the cake (st)

I just need my car back because it's +o( without her.

I've seen this before, when the engine was assembled at vw they may have dropped the piston on it's head. It probably showed no damage so they put it together, but the top ring would no longer move free in the ring land creating a real HOT spot on the piston and high speed detonation. The hot spot is easy to see in your pix, where the piston is burned down to the skirt. This is also assuming the other 5 are ok. Luck of the draw...I'd be real suprised if anything is wrong with the rest of your engine.....a slow death...

same thing happened on my mates 200sx - he had it mapped by some 2 bob company that specialises in BMW's and his car ended up running lean and on the way back from southend a week later the tip of the spark plug fell off into the engine and ka-boom!

ive got a spare rod and piston you can have

if your car was forced induction i would say detonation was the problem, does the piston look melted at all ?

the other option could be piston failure a small crack has developed due to manufacturing, the fact that it looks as if a large piece has come away from the back, the depth of the scab looks pretty even,

and this has lay dormant untill you put the components under severe pressure.

another option could be the oil spray nossle which sprays oil on to the underside of the pistons to cool them, has blocked or failed causing overheating. Cast pistons can not take too much heat before they self destruct

unlike a forged piston.

just a few wild ideas

The piston looks kind of melted at the top, deffinatly a hot spot but everything else seems fine, also the plug in no1 was melted.Ive got to wait 2wks though until work can continue because the mechanic is off on his hols.

I might take that piston and rod though pete, I just need to see this mechanic on his return.

You need to have a real good look at the other pistons/plugs.

chances are the other 5 wernt far behind. The fact the plug tip melted to proves it went because it was lean, rather than piston failure.

As i said before it could be a faulty plug/lead/coilpack or injectors making that one cylinder lean out - but considering the situation were it popped it sounds more like the map.

Not good fella. I'd be surprised if your bottom end is ok after that kind of destruction! Is there much scoring to the bore at all?

A funny low mileage problem like I had mate. Every blown up VR6 engine i've heard of (and it hasn't been many!) have been low mileage ones. Mine shat its pants, not to the extent of yours mind, and it had only covered 60k!!

Big engines + town driving + short journeys = Short life, when guys like us get our hands on them. We get hold of them and put more stress on them than they've ever been subjected to and they go pop.

Mind you, if you sit there revving it all day long and stream it to your avitar it's gonna go bang!! :-p ;)

If you don't fancy spending a fortune on it mate. From experience I would recommend buying a second hand engine or just keep any eye out for a short block.

Not a nice feeling mate, hope you get it sorted soon. If you need a hand with anything give me a shout.
