1997 VW Golf VR6 mk3

So this has happened over the last two weeks: • I became a father to a beautiful baby girl • I became the proud owner of a mk2 Golf GTi So let's skip the baby part and get onto the part you guys want to know about, the 1991 Golf GTi. Got a text from my pal Matt asking me if I was serious about turbo'ing the mk3, I said yeah course but can't afford to part with £4k at Stealths to do it. He then said how about a mk2 Golf VR6 with T4 turbo for £1200. I immediately gave him my money and asked him to get it bought. Luckily for me Matt helped with getting the car brought down etc as I was sitting in2 points -
What gains can I get from oversized valves, do I need to change any thing else and what size do i go for, I don't have a clue when it comes to head work and cams, just want to know how it all works and what's the point in bigger valves etc.1 point

The mk3 (red one) is the donor for the mk2, sorry Bealieboy but the mk2 is a 3 door and space grey and I've always wanted a mk2. I'm not gonna leave this site though, too many good peeps on here.1 point

Oversized Valves?
redvr6_girl reacted to Bealieboy for a topic
If you think about it like this jay, the bigger valves, the more air in and the more gases out therefore increasing flow. Porting and polishing your head will also give small gains in flow. I believe that you need to be careful with the porting though as you can actually decrease flow if you're not careful. Cams wise, it's best not to go too big, 263's will make good gains without moving the torque curve too much. 268's or 270's will remove torque from the mid range making the car less driveable for every day use. Nice if you like giving it the 'who's your daddy' all over the place or forcing1 point -
After some research last week Ive started collecting parts for a 2.8 24v swap. In for a penny... o2a box, shifter mech with cables and standard flywheel.1 point

As some of you know I've been breaking a charged VR recently and have noticed that it has a bigger set of discs using the standard caliper on a spacer bracket? Anyone have any idea what they are? Or who made them? Had a quick measure whilst still on the car with a tape and they're about 270-280mm?1 point

Got a few more bits done this week, not as much as I would have liked as works been busy and I've been waiting on bits including the longer belt for the charger that's coming from America and is silly expensive! [emoji22] Popped into the local pirtek to get a new fittting for the oil return into the sump and ended up with a complete new oil return; a Changed the plugs and leads while it was all apart and 3 or 4 of the plugs weren't much more than finger tight which may explain it being a bit down on power at the rolling road day? Then got the schrick back on there; And realised how much of a1 point

Another little update, been very busy steeling all of the go faster bits off of this rotbox to go on mine and trying to sell bits of it to pay for it all......... well at least in the end it should of all cost me somewhere around that magic £200 mark I reckon [emoji6][emoji23]!! So far I've had the 312mm front brake set up and got the calipers cleaned and painted and bought a set of drilled mtech discs and mintex pads; The gear turret/shifter which has been modded by the Phirm to be quickshift which I've refurbed with new bushes All back together and greased up with the cables from the donor1 point

Just bought these and can't decide if I like them more than the wintercults, I'd paint them a different colour or something though not a fan of white! thoughts anyone? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

So got the eisenmann back box fitted today. It's a fair bit louder than the miltek in a nice way........I think! Tx Autosport got it fitting quite nicely but it turned out better to butcher the miltek back box for the bend over the axle and then extend the whole box back by about 3 inches including the hangers so it sat right with the US bumper, bit of a mission but I've not seen any other vr6's or golfs with one of these on (in the uk anyway) so I suppose it's worth it! On the ramp at tx; You can see the extended bit behind the box here; Then it fitted; It hangs a bit low at the moment becau1 point

Got a lot of the golf painted today, was hoping to paint everything apart from the bumpers but ran out of time and the pub next door to work was calling by 3 o'clock! So anyway this is what I got done, needed 2 or 3 hours more of stripping and prepping and got the doors and tailgate off, would have liked to have painted it with the doors and tailgate on but didn't want the paint edges in the shuts; Then got it into the oven and up on axle stands with the wheels off so I can get under the arches and sills etc, plus I didn't want overspray on my wheels! And got it masked panel wiped and tack cloth1 point

Once I was happy with the fit I got it cleaned up and tacked in place; Then got some sections trimmed up to fit the holes and got them tacked in then got the whole lot welded trying my best not to put to much heat through the panel; Got the welds ground down in case you hadn't noticed I've also got rid of the wiper but wanted to keep the badge; Had to a bit of heat shrinking as there were a couple of wobbles here and there, then feathered out all the rough edges and gave it a skim of finishing glaze; Then was priming something else so got it masked up and got some primer on it; Here's a co1 point
