Thanks for your help! I had it serviced today (oil change/filters changed/new spark plugs) and its running and sounding fine, so maybe I'll leave it for now...

    Timing belt query....

You can scan it with Vagcom, will say whether the chains have stretched! Link is here http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?239642-R32-chains-and-tensioners Saw this below from the same post If it's an AUE or AQP (pre 2002) you have no worries at all with that engine and I'd be surprised if it needs anything more than a new upper guide rail. It's only the pre 2005 R32s that are well documented as having the upper chain stretching issue, but technically speaking, the BDE/BDF 4Motions (2002 on) share the same VVT and chain setup as the R32, so if you have one of these engines, I would change

Dubbed the Tobi Golf 2 4Motion GT35, this hatchback is tuned by Druckwerk and under the hood instead of the original four-cylinder now features a turbocharged 2.9-liter VR6 engine. It sends all of its 600 hp through through a 4Motion all-wheel drive setup. Watch the video b

  7. Damn right I did. Nothing keeps me away from VWNW! George and Dan were diamonds and helped me out big time! Of course they did all the work and I sat back with a brew [emoji23][emoji23] joking of course... Big job to get alternator off with charger. Ended up taking front end off, charger, pulleys just to get to alternator. At that point noticed the bolt was rounded off and just spinning in the housing so had to smash the alternator apart to get mole grips on it so could remove the nut. The alternator was clicking when spinning. Although bearings looked OK and was still s
