plus and minus of a straight through exhaust ?
Macca replied to rudedubber's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
I have only a backbox, it is straight through from cat back. sounds great, with loads of popping. Id imagine without the cat it would be louder, sound awesome, and there would be a decent increase in power (5-10bhp), possibly a reduction in torque? not sure about this. -
Not claiming to be any sort of expert but: when i was doing my photography for my GCSE, we were taught that it is the background that makes a good picture (amongst other things). Its good if the background is uncluttered and simple so it doesnt distract u from the car, and if 'lines of interest' lead your eye into the main feature ie car. Lighting is important too, experiment with the sun and car at different angles, and at different times of day. Also experiment with camera angles. Your car is so low getting the camera down on the tarmac should produce some nice shots.

what kind of car kicks a VR6s' arse?
Macca replied to apd's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Lowest boxster has about 200bhp, and the tiptronic is about the same 0-60 as a manual Vr. Highest spec has about 270bhp and about 5.5 0-60 Cayenne turbo has 450bhp and also about 5.5 0-60 Stattooooooo -
Bit negative this thread, am i getting the impression people are getting fed up with their VRs? Ive started to look around as well though, and started to seriously consider other makes (3 litre twin turbo for 4grand anyone?) acf8181, if i were selling i might start advertising at £3500, but be open to offers as there seem to be LOADS for sale at a lot less.

Totally forgot i posted this! thanks for the replies. I went to a car audio place and they were v helpful. I think im going to stick with my kenwood head unit as i think its ok - it has the bass, mid and treble EQ settings. Decision is between some 6x9s or an amp and sub. Sub sounded a bit OTT i thought. -
Got a birthday coming up and thought i should do something about the crap stereo/speakers in my car. I am fairly clueless as to head units/ subs/ amps etc. so was really just looking for how id best spend 100-200 quid? I have a kenwood 6 CD changer and head unit, 4 x 40Watts, otherwise standard speakers. Interestingly the sound has never been as good as in my last golf which had a crapper looking Sony tape unit. It was a 96 car though compared to my 94 now: did VW upgrade the standard speakers at some point?

Cool, thats what i was hoping. I also want the car lower, which is kind of defeating the object of improving the handling i know! Should be able to find a happy medium though with the konigsports
-
Here's mine on 16s... doesnt handle well at all, hate to think what it'd be like with bigger wheels, saving for coilovers atm.

Youre lucky cos youve got a 1990 car, the wiring is dead easy apparently, just plugs straight in. Theres a lot of info on the net about the conversion. the futrell works site is a good place to start. A company would charge about 2500-3000 quid i think. Id have a go myself, save a load of money and get a whole lot more out of it!

12K to spend hmmm? Mk2 rallye - 4k 20vT transplant - 6k (?) 2k to spend on interior, bodywork, other bits as you choose!
-
Theres a group buy going to happen in the next few weeks over on CGTI, with Konigsports adjustable coilovers going for 525 quid, you can have them as low/high hard/soft as you like, and would be my choice.

[moved] Steering problems
Macca replied to binliner's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Not going to spend money if im not 100% sure its the problem. Think ill just sit on it for a bit. If im going to spend money the tyres which are real budget jobs need changing and the shocks are standard with lowering springs (previous owner). Just cant wait till i start work then i wont have to keep skimping on everything! -

How much to sort the rack then, if im getting the light/ heavy symptoms. The camber effects it a lot, the car pulls to the right, so generally the camber balances it out. If the road tilts slightly to the right though, the car would be off the road pretty quickly! say sub 50 yards -
[moved] Steering problems
Macca replied to binliner's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
thanks for the info mate. Ive had the alignment checked twice now and both times were fine, tried all sorts of tyre pressures and all the easy things to check. I guess to check my theory i should have a look at the wear on the brake pads to see if its uneven. -

binliner, did you get this sorted in the end? Mine is suffering from pulling strongly to on side, but the weird thing is that one day it will feel fine, one day it will be terrible, next day fine etc. etc. and even during a journey it seems to come and go (regardless of road camber) I have also had teh ABS light come on and off, although not necessarily in conjunction with the dodgey steering, but i have read about the traction control system whereby if a wheel is detected to be spinning, the brakes are applied slightly to that wheel to stop it. could this be malfunctioning in some way? I find zymol plishing wax to be pretty good, although if the finish has been neglected for a long time you may need to do more. Ive heard people talking about clay bars (?) being excellent in restoring a finish, i find metallic t-cut to be pretty good also.

Shit, i know how frustrating this sort of thing can be, i reckon on picking up a few major scratches/ dents a year though. Man your car is LOW btw!!!

I like the look of that kinetic motorsport kit A LOT! http://www.kineticmotorsport.com/projects/kineticvr6tkit.html Also like the price! Thats only about £1400. Looks like its all pretty new, but seems to be getting some positive feedback on the american forums. Also looks like theyre putting up some DIY instructions. Wonder if they can ship kits ovewr here easily? Group buy anyone!!!!!??? [ Edited Fri Aug 27 2004, 11:04AM ]

I used some metallic T-Cut on mine. Was scared it would cut right through the paint, but i soon realised you need wrists of steel to get results. Mucho rubbing later, and i almost completely got rid of a big scratch. Also cleared up some overspray from my dodgy paint job easily. Make sure its METALLIC T-cut though or you may well do some damage

Head gasket? could be a possibility, have you noticed any difference in how the car runs? noticed any smell/ oil in the coolant?

All the main players make exhausts for VR6s. I have a supersprint which i like, other good ones are jetex, milltek, scorpion and lots of others. DONT buy a Peco - you might be tempted as they are the cheapest, but they make a fucking racket and are not cool. Changing a backbox will not be difficult, just make sure that the car is well supported on axle stands as you may need to really beat the old exhaust off. Or for only 15quid an exhaust shop will change them for u. Make sure they get the fit right, as theres nowt worse than a floppy pipe

Probably cheapest way to 250bhp is with nitrous oxide - discuss

The relays are located behind the fusebox cover on the drivers side lower facia panel. to gain access to the relays remove the fusebox cover. Prise the trim panel from the top of the facia panel then slacken and remove all the panel retaining screws. Release the retaining clips and lower the fusebox out from the facia. If the relay is working you should hear it click as the circuit is energised. If this is the case the fault lies with the components or wiring of the system. If it does need replacing the relay is in position 8 for intermittent wiper/wash. I had to fix my washers/wipers this mor
