What are the rules when using Diagnostic equipmet, should the engine be running or not? I am looking for a potential MAF fault but i am aware that these are a barstard to track down because the ECU only lists fault codes for MAFs that are totally knackered (or the MAF wiring) a MAF operating slightly out of range appears to the ECU as a good one!!

This is starting to pi$$ me off now...I obtained a used MAF (exactly the same part no.) and fitted it (2 min job). Now i have a differnt set of symptoms. initially if you remember with the original maf connected the engine would start and idle but as soon as you touched the throttle it would konk out . Disconect the MAF and the engine works after a fashion (its gutless pulling away in generally down the bottom end) its not to hot allround but that the worse bit. New (2nd hand) MAF and the engine starts, it seems to rev and for a few seconds all seems well then when iddleing it speeds up, slo

It turns out that the part nos are different i have a 021906462A and they have a 021906641 - anyone know if they are compatible?

How do you get a MAF direct from Bosch - is there a number to call or a website or what? I have located a used one (same part no etc) for £25 + P&P +vat its got to be worth a go for that!!

The car is late '97 registered with a WW chassis number (1998). To be honest i am not sure how you tell if its ODB1 or 2 (any help on that greatly appreciated). I live on the Berkshire Wiltshire border between Hungerford and Marlborough. I work in Hungerford and i frequently travel to London and Manchester.

Can anyone support this:- Yesterday eve I jumped in my VR6 to leave work, the engine started and as i tried to reverse it died - just like i had stalled it. I tried again... same thing. So i started it for a third time and tried to rev the engine - it wouldn't just died, but there was the most pungent smell from the cat. I had a bit of a fiddle with stuff under the bonnet but made no progress. I called the AA who arrived pronto (Well done the AA). He unplugged the MAF and the engine now has some power. None at the bottom end (have to limp away from lights, junctions etc) and the fuel consumpti

I know this is covered all over the place on this site but trying to the pull the pieces together is hell!!! It appears as though quite a few members have or have access to VAG-COM equipment. My VR6 is very ill and requires imediate consultation with a diagnostic guru. I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread that peoople could reply to who have vag-com and who would be prepared to loan/hire/exchange for beer etc. The idea being that they say what area of the country they live and the best method of contact and anyone in desperate need can find a local member who might be able to

I am 37 and my Mrs is 31. I have just got a 97 VR6 (no mods) and i am insured with Esure (www.esure.com) I have 7 yrs NCD and we pay £330 fully comp - protected and includes business use as well. Now i reckon thats cheap! To get a good quote from them you need 4yrs NCD or better. Cheers

My VR6 is not a Highline but it has heated leather seats. Well at least they are supposed to be heated. As fasr as i can tell the drivers seat does not work and only the top of the back rest on the passengers side appears to get warm. What should i expect? If elements are gone can they be replaced? Leather is nice but its f*!?ing cold this time of the year if the heaters dont work.... Cheers Hotshot

Does or has anyone suffered with this problem... BTW I am new to VR6's have had a few GTi's though When the car is warm it can take as many as 10 or 15 start attempts to get the car going. Each time you turn the key the engine catches and then dies almost immediately. Eventually she'll start and continue to run. When the engine is running there is no indication that anything is wrong - plenty of power ticks over nicely etc. I do have a Clifford Concept 50x and Virtual key fitted(imobilises starter and fuel pump) but i dont think the problem is related to these as it starts fine when cold.
