I just tried getting a quote from Elephant - £463 ie £100 cheaper than mine now with Privilege. Strange because I'm sure I tried them last May at renewal time and they were much more expensive.

Have given up being depressed(theres nothing I can do about it now) and am just going to have to bite the £1200 bullet, keep on enjoying the car and hope nothing major happens again(until I can afford an R32).

The quote I have so far is £650+vat for a 96 engine with guaranteed 54k on(mine is 90k anyway), plus about £3-400 for fitting.

My 96 VR6 practically broke down on Sunday in Birmingham with a horrendous knocking noise coming from the engine. Got it picked up by RAC and taken to a VW specialist. Reported Verdict - Con Rod -Bearing turned round on crankshaft blocking lube hole and resulting on non-lubed mechanical damage to both. Replacement engine reportedly cheaper than repair! Any advice would be appreciated on: 1) Is this just "one of those things"? I can't see how I could have avoided it.... 2) What sort of cost would be reasonable for a VR6 enginer from a breakers yard, and for fitting? 3) Does getting a replace
