Was sure it was a wheel bearing and that confirms it, because I am very fussy and the noise has been present for afew days it will be sorted this week. It will drive me up the wall, thanks alot.

Got a gumbling noise from the front of the VR most of the time but louder aroun 40/50mph which seems to be getting worse every day, have checked for play in the wheel but nothing of note. However when in a straight line the noise is there but when turning it disapears. Does this sound typical of a shot bearing or not??? Should it be quieter when under load/turning. And depending on a right or left bend would this indicate the o/s or n/s bearing being dead???

Question, how often do you all treat your leather seats and with what stuff. Didn't really think about until a post on here triggered a cell in the grey matter. Advice appreciated

Am loving the wooden wheel thing and would buy a VW OE if I could find out where to purchase one from. On another note the leather on my wheel is worn, can they be recovered and if so where and by who, costs etc, how long would the wheel be away for, any info????

I had a 96 Vr which had a standard alarm with full closure fitted and VW fobs, have now bought a 97 Vr without any fobs. Is there a way of checking whether the alarm is still present and I need some new fobs or whether the alarm has been removed for any reason and then I'm left with my hand in the pocket to fork out for a new one?????

On my new motor the power steering feels very heavy (97 Highline with 80K), will a change in steering fluid help or is this a waste of time, also the clutch action is heavy compared to my last Vr6 2 years ago, what can be done to smooth this out, its a major pet hate to to have a heavy clutch when it should be light and smooth as silk.Have been told greasing pedal box and replacement seals in slave cylinder may work???? Many thanks the fonts of knowledge

Synta silver all the way, as prev stated if the VAG dealers use why the hell not!!!!!!!. And to add to this MPG frenzie 250 to a tank is OK and about normal with a mix of town and m-way miles. Although these fuel prices are doing my £its in.

Mine was starting to creap up on the water temp dial, and bought and got a mate to fit the new stat and coolant, the Vr is much happier now and running cooler, mines got 83K on the clock.

Should I be worried!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VR6Andy replied to VR6Andy's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
I had my new stat and coolant fitted today, also oil and filter change with Synta sliver. On the 40 mile run home at the steady 80mph and the water temp did'nt budge above 90 and the oil topped out at 102 and dropped, off the m-way to 90, looks like I've cured the overheating probs -
Whats Missing??????????????????
VR6Andy replied to VR6Andy's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thanks for that chaps, yes the heat shield is fine and the hole is on the drivers side of the CAT. I did think I had lost a sensor but it appears that is a regular problem so I will get it blocked. Thanks again, PS too strapped to buy a CAT back but it was worth the suggestion. -
I arrived home last night and heard the tones of a blowing exhaust. Bas$%rd, the blow sounded to be coming from under the drivers seat, The CAT i think?. I have looked and found what looks to be a missing bolt, there is no sign of the usual rotting. When I cover the hole all is cured. So what do you think is missing>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What a complete Twat, it will mend though and now would be the perfect time to fit a vented wing!!!!

I have checked out several threads relating to oil temp, I changs my oil every 5K with semi-synthetic and recently noticed that while driving at a steady 80mph the oil temp can touch 114 degrees no problems, if I thrashed it i am sure it could get to 120. I have been told this is an acceptable temp as the warmer the oil the better the lubrication and thus quality of oil.???? What do you think. To add to this for the past 18 months the water temp has not moved above 90 which is central, it has now started to raise on runs to about 100. IS MY VR TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING????

Have you got the previous MOT's, if you have I would'nt be worried. If it checks out your a lucky person-only 200K left in the motor then!!!!

Before the Schrick goes on...
VR6Andy replied to FishWick's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
These Vrs can be great but also pains in the butt. I had a 92 Vento VR6, this had very similar problems. at between 1 and 2K rpm it would cut out as if no fuel was present and then when I put my foot down it would hesitate, jerk and go. I did the following :- VAG com- No faults listed, i put on another coil pack which made no difference, new fuel filter no difference and finally new plugs and leadsthis made minor improvement. I sold the bugger in the end to cut my losses. Hope this helps and the problem you have described sounds the same as the Vento I had. I was also advised that the idle sta -
Oil Leak ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!
VR6Andy replied to VR6Andy's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Cheers it sounds like the majority rules and i need the 2 oil cooler seals and probably the pipes. I am lucky that no air con on this one. Is the guy at VAG talking rubbish then telling me that the seal from an oil filter will sort it!!!!!! He must be a tit. -
Oil Leak ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!
VR6Andy replied to VR6Andy's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
It is very similar but my oil filter housing is at the bottom of the block pointing to the road. I dont know whether some are different but mine is an internal filter not the metal screw on types. i have been wondering if this cap if for an old type oil filter. -
Ok Vr techno wizards, question time, I have a 96 VR and its developed a small oil leak in the garage. I have looked under the bonnet and found that a cap similar to the one for the oil filter which is at the front lower part of the block is the culprit. I can only describe it as this and it faces the rad, i have visited the local VAG parts dept who informed me that this requires the same seal as the oil filter housing, i have purchased this at 2 quid. A friend has told me that this cap/cover is probably a blanking plate for the older model??? Does this sound about right and when i drop the oi
