I agree, mine takes a few minutes to get to the middle of the gauge then stays there no matter what driving conditions. If you are losing alot more than i am then i would pressure test the cooling system. Very easy to do with the engine cold, although you do need a simple pressure test kit to do it. Sykes Pickervant do a good one that is used in the trade. It can tell you if you have any leaks you cant see, especially the internal ones. Does your VR have alot of white smoke , even when warm?? Additionally, your thermostat could be faulty, this will account for running hot, but not for the loss

Just a thought, b4 I start ripping the head off, how common is it for the heat exchanger (oil cooler) to fail. This would give me the exact same symptoms!!!!! without CO2 testing, i cant confirm the head. Anyone ever bought one, estimated costs???

HELP! Rough idle, stalling, undriveable!!!
mickelson replied to jonnyedinburgh's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
i know that the camshaft sensor sits by the coilpack, does this also act like a hall sender that used to be in dizzys?(OBD1 i think has it) I am sure that this sensor tells the ECU of the TDC position for CYL 1. If so, there may not be a crankshaft sensor. That said, the Bently manual shows an RPM sensor G28 down the front of the block. so maybe thats it. -
yeah cheers, got a feeling i will be doing them in the near future, the head i can do on the drive but the chains..... !!!!! Just trying to get hold of some facilities through my job. Got a feeling my head is on its way out now so that may account for high oil temp. Posted a new thread on it. Cheers for your help. -
Give the money to me and i'll try some mods out first LOL

OK, I cant ignore the signs anymore: Slow loss of coolant (3 months) Milky oil, just been renewed as well High oil temp Will have to bite the bullet and whip the head off after a final compression test. Please can you advise ladies and gents of what i require in respect to parts etc and who to get from. I have GSF / EURO / and VW near by. Does the head set give me everything I need. There is always something else i am sure. Price guide would be ideal!!!!! Here is my small list so far. Head Gasket Set , Bolts......... [ Edited ]

HELP! Rough idle, stalling, undriveable!!!

As soon as i read your symptoms i thought it would be the crankshaft position sensor. Unsure of its location on the VR but it sounds like a safe bet. If you have had a VAG -COM check or similar then I would go with it. -

be very careful when removing your plug leads with the engine running. apart from te obvious, you could damage the ECU or other sensative electronics!!!! -

any ideas what might cause high oil temp on a VR. does the heat exchanger fail much?? What do I need to buy, is it just a switch and thermostat?? -
Neuspeed Thermo n fan switch

gents, could you clarify what it is you on about? is it a replacement coolant thermostat and fan switch. my engine oil is normally at 102 / 106 on the motorway. is this normal??? coolant temp is always spot on the centre of the gauge. -
most definately, the majority from the engine to body will be flexi, quite likely it will be one of these that will have perished.

Not sure mate but will have a look about,

According to the Bentley manual I have it says that the Receiver is behind the bumper. I looked on my VR and found it to be correct. It sits underneath your evap canister down past the air box. from the receiver the pipe work goes up to the Evaporator which will be within the heating compartment. the chances are that you may have a perished flexy pipe somewhere. The only way to prove it, is to have the system pressure tested by an air con specialist. They should put a dye in the system then pressurise it. hopefully you will be able to see the dye escaping. If the yellow stuff you are seeing pr

if anyone wants any more info on aircon let me know!!!!! I need to test my knowledge LOL

It could well be your aircon. It shouldnt hiss for long as it is under such high pressure that it wont take long to discharge. You should have 134A in your system, it can come with any colour dye in it. to air on the side of caution, untill you can prove it is something else, do not turn on your air con at all, the refridgerant lubricates your pump, without it, your pump will sieze. i suggest you get it checked asap, as your aircon should be operated at least once a month (even in cold weather) just to maintain lubricated seals. Just done aircon course through my job so am a bit of a aircon sa
