My apology for not answering sooner, but my VR6 was recently written off by a large tree that fell on it during a severe storm. However, to answer, the problem was the IGNITION READER COIL / CABLE. This carries the signals from the key reader [reads the key transponder] to the engine computer. When this becomes older it becomes more sensitive to interfearence from the surrounding wires. The answer was to get an appropriate length of plastic hose, slit it along one side and slip it over the cable. The extra 1 - 2 mm of shielding fixed the problem. If this dosen't work 100% you will have to fit

Thanks you for the replies thus far. To clarify, yes the plug leads are pretty new, and the immobilizer unit has been removed and checked by the VW agents, and appears to be OK. The engine starts readily at all times, except when its at running temperature, and even then the problem is sporadic, but appears to be more frequent then say a month ago. Peter

I have 1995 VR6 with about 30,000 km since a complete engine rebuild. The motor performs like new, but there is an occasional hot start problem [cold starting is no problem]. The motor starts easily enough, but only runs for about 2 seconds. During that 2 seconds, you can let it idle, or rev it, but it will cut out after about 2 seconds. If you rev it, and it cuts out, you can switch the ignition off and then on again [while the flywheel keeps the engine rotating] and it will rev for another 2 seconds before cutting out again. This can be repeated indefinitely. The engine immobilizer has been

VW offer 2 cartridge types: 021 115 561 A [also marked 021 115 562 LD1] 021 115 562 A Both types are the same size, but differ in that 1 has no pressure valve or reinforcing to support the filter paper, but both appear to fit correctly into the housing. How do I find out which is correct for my engine. I have not been able to settle this using the vehicle model or engine number. I have pics of both filter types, and the inside of the housing. Thank you PeterP

OK, thanks guys: 1.so my next question is how do I judge which chains need to be replaced ? 2. And what about the chain tensioners, how will I know if they need replacing ? 3. And the chain sprokets. If the chain is stretched/worn, wouldn't the the sprokets become out of spec too ? 4. And last wuestion, can I remove the chain cover without taking the head off ? PeterP

I have a VR6 with high milage, and it has recently developed a faint rattle at 1800 - 2000 rpm. Some days there is no noise, other days it's there. Most noticable when accelerating. Dosen't matter if it's hot or cold. Could there be any other cause but timing chain ? Maybe something like a noise in the crank case ventilation system ? I would hate to do the chains and find it was something simple I had overlooked. PeterP South Africa

I am looking for information needed to overhaul the gearbox of a VR6. Extracts from a workshop manual covering dismantling and re-assembly would be helpful. Of particular concern is the correct method of selecting shims after replacing bearings, which may involve measuring the 'pre-load' of the bearings. Any help would be most appreciated. PeterP
