Help - cracked cylnder head + other problems
FP3 replied to FP3's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Have taken it to VAGTech near Leighton Buzzard & they diagnosed a timing issue & a few other things but nothing as dire as a cracked cylinder head. VW dealership going to get an earful on wrong diagnosis & I want my money back!! -
Can't believe it - just before 70,000 mile service the VR starts running very lumpy. Had a diagnostic done by local VW dealership & they report a cracked cylinder head costing over £3K to replace (obviously not an option) but said we could try & get it skimmed. Any idea of what this may cost & where to get it done (Herts). Also reported that I needed to replace the oil rocker switch, the water pump, coolant housing & cooler, plus rear bump stops, oh & a chipped fog light thrown in for good measure. What to do, up until a week ago it was a great runner just passed MOT

I got a new R32 back in May last year & went for the manual having tried the DSG - it's still anauto box at the end of th eday & if you really want to drive it then you've got to stir the stick. Great car.

Blimey - it seems that a few people get a little upset if anyone dares to say anything negative about the precious VR. I only started this thread to highlight that for the time being the Mk5 R32 lies at the top of the (non-modified)Golf tree - in 10 years time I'm sure it will be where the VR6 is now. I also am going to keep my VR & would probably trade in the R32 for something new as & when the time is right, but the VR has so much character it will stay until it can go no longer, having said that, the R32 does make such a sweet noise.....

Have noted that an R36 may be on the way but it will be the new Mk6 Golf which is being built to a much smaller budget than the current Mk5 - will have to see how it matches up but for the moment I open my window every time I drive off in 1st or 2nd just to hear it roar....

I drove my VR6 Highline (Diamond Black '97 - 61K, all original mint condition) yesterday after having driven my new R32 for the last month - oh dear how sad it was. I can't believe how it was sooooo slow, the steering was so heavy & the brakes spongy. I've loved & cherished my VR6 but it is now consigned to the wife to cart the kids around - the R32 is an absolute beast!

I have a Golf VR6 R reg Highline but the petrol light has never come on. The petrol guage has been all the way on the bottom of the red zone & I reckon I've been seriously close to running out of fuel a couple of times (lovely mpg from the VR!!) but still no petrol light. So the question is, does the VR have one??

I'm on the look out for a good independent VW specialist & have come across Follett Motors in St Albans who say they are specialist VW/Audi - anyone heard of them & any good? I live near Watford but work in MK so any other local recommendations would be useful. ABS light has come on again & I'm buggered if I'm going back to a dealership to sort out especially as it's probably just the speed sensor again!!

Hi there, new to the site although on my 2nd VR6 - had this one, R Reg Black Highline 52K (all standard at the moment), for about 6 months & no major problems although now on cold mornings it doesn't start too well & appears not to be firing on all cylinders. Is it likely to be a plug, lead, distributer cap issue? Any advice welcome...
