  1. I'm another serial mk3 owner. This was my previous GTI 8v:
  2. As phm says, it is quite normal for a bit of difference side to side, though mine were within about 3mm. Make sure you have used brand new VAG top mounts or the difference could be give in old top mounts.

Answered it yourself there mate! Also, they're welsh which is never going to help!
  4. No idea, but you are right it is bloody high!
  5. If you can't read it, why not just measure the offset?
  6. Hmm 5a, well it could be worse! >Golfa, click on the link!
  7. You will only get three points, but in your first two years of driving you can lose your licence at 6, rather than 12 which applies thereafter. So, it's time to be very careful!!
  8. Trouble is, it will look odd unless you do swap the back to mk3.5 cabby bumper etc, which requires a bit more work. This was one of the best conversions - Brad at 1552 Design's demo car some years ago: There was a thread on VWVortex detailing somebody doing the rear end work, but I can't find it just now.
  9. That £2,600 quote is severely cheap at your age! Personally, I'd never want to spend that kind of money on insurance, but as you say it's your money!! Unfortunately, I don't think any of the specialists who most of us tend to insure with will touch you. For example, Brentacre won't insure anyone under 21 on a VR IIRC. These specialists run schemes with underwriters and need to keep the overall claims experience of their scheme to a decent level, in order that they can continue to offer competitive premiums, hence they are not going to take the risk of very young drivers in these sorts of
  10. I've driven a couple of VRs with Highsports, then drove one with Konigsports, and knew I needed Konigs! Mine have been on a couple of months now, and after a few plays with the damping, I have got a quite decent ride quality (never will be great with chunky ARBs and 40 profile tyres!), and it handles very nicely. Compared to mine, I found cars with Highsports a bit bouncy unless they ran quite a high ride height.
  11. Does it always pull to the left, or just when the road is cambered that way?
  12. I'm sure you've tried this, but make sure the external handle is going right back in. My passenger side one is a bit stiff and doesn't always return right the way in. Then the door will not open from inside or out!
  13. Looks nice and stock. The Phirm are good at quick-shift kits - they'll build it on your car and they work very well.
  14. Because the distance between two of the bolt holes isn't 100mm. Whereas, if you put a circle through the centre of each you get the measurement of 100mm. Hence it being called the PCD (Pitch CIRCLE Diameter)....
  15. Just found this pic whilst browsing vortex. With airbag off, the wheel is clearly different.
  16. It's a similar design, but I bet the euro-spec airbag won't fit!
  17. The numbers are: 8 inch wide rim 17 inch diameter rim 5 studs 100mm is the diameter of a circle through the centre of the 5 studs et35 is the offset, which is the distance of the mounting surface (onto the hub) from the centre of the rim. These will fit on fine, though you may have some issues with the arches catching if you run it low. Rolling the arches may fix the problem. Use 205/40/17 tyres. Highsports will be fine, though Konigsports are better if you can afford them!
  18. Aren't US spec wheels different anyway? They have much bigger airbags...
  19. 8x17 at 60mm down is quite likely to catch the arches - I've known a few people run the Audi TT six spokes for example, and have issues. Those sticking to 7.5 wide rims tend to have less trouble with the arches.
  20. I work for an Insurance Brokers in the City of London, earning plenty more than the minimum wage, but not as much as I'd like! The VR is a toy really as I commute by train - still manage to do about 8,000 a year in her though!
  21. Good idea, but don't do it publicly on here or he'll know when you are coming and won't be there!
  22. What's worrying is why it's been unplugged! The point of it is to keep the water circulating after switch off to help cool the engine. If it's been unplugged, just hope the previous owner was cooling the engine carefully before switching off!
