  1. In the US, the five door was called the Golf, but from about 1995 all three doors were called GTI's. The GTI came in 2.0 8v (similar to the UK GTI, but with a crossflow head), and as a VR6. The word Golf did not appear on the GTI's. As to why? Who knows but I suspect it was an attempt to distance the car from the Golf name, after the hideously badly built late 80's and early 90's Golfs when US production first shifted from Westmoreland to Mexico.
  2. That would be good, though the 'Click here to see list of new items' sort of does that. The only thing that annoys me with that is the limitation to only 50 posts. On another forum I use, the similar function shows all threads since I last logged in, but in the same format as a usual forum index, so each thread only appears once, and you can tell which ones you have read by the colour of the title.
  3. Mine's badged at the moment, but VR's are one of the great Q-cars when debadged as to your average bloke on the street there's little apart from the wheels and exhaust to differentiate them from a Golf GL. Much more 'surprise factor' when you blow another driver away!!
  4. TBH, the Schrick doesn't add much in bhp terms anyway, it's the torque figure that increases dramatically! I took the Schrick apart and fixed it, and it made such a difference!
  5. I'm running 205/40/16 at the moment, but the ride is pretty nasty, and I'll switch to 205/45/16 when I change them (the tyres came with the wheels). 215/40/16 was the stock mk3 tyre for 16's but there's really not much difference in rolling radius from them to a 205/45/16 which are generally cheaper! I've had 215/40/16, 205/50/15 and 205/40/16 on the VR and can't say I've noticed a difference in acceleration - it's not as if it's a big change in radius tbh!
  6. Odd, mine's the same year and I can open it fine with the key. Might be a strangely wired alarm? Batteries- alarm installers, Maplins, even Boots sell a few of them - it depends which type you have.
  7. You can generally tell when the remote battery is going flat, as it will tend to take a longer press or repeated presses to operate. The issue you have is that the car is deadlocked, but you should always be able to open it from the driver's door with the key. Is it a mk3?
  8. Most people run 205/40/17 - anything wider or higher profile can run into rubbing issues fairly easily. They're perfect for 7x17's too.
  9. Nooo, that was my idea!! I've reckoned on 20mm - have bought the spacers (from another member on here, don't know where he got them), just need to finish polishing up the BBS and I'll find out!
  10. Always thought that Cupra R alloys would look good on a mk3 and by god, they do!
  11. Close ups look great and I love the rims - take some more pics from a bit further back though if you can, would be good to see the rest of it!! The first pic strangely reminds me of a mk2 - the wheels even resemble the BBS RA's on them.
  12. Sounds about right to me? My last renewal was
  13. It's only film. Peel it off and then use some white spirit or similar to soften the goo which is left on the window. It's a pain of a job but it does come off.
  14. Try cleaning the sensor / checking the wiring is intact before shelling out for a new one.
  15. The Lexus lights did go rather well with the Venoms though!
  16. I think these mk4 rims can work rather nicely:
  17. Well I guess the only answer to that must be: "." Ps. Nice plate!
  18. Have you VAG-COM'd it? Might through up some error codes to give you an idea. VR's can certainly be thirsty but there's something wrong to manage 4mpg!
  19. The 'vsr' - actually Schrick VGI, unless you are very lucky - manifold, doesn't make a huge difference to the figures, but it really changes the characteristics of the engine, producing great lumps of torque much sooner in the rev range. To me, it makes the car (mine has VGI, remap, ram air filter and remus exhaust).
