FAO - Mike Tonge. i only post on SN to piss off the scooby lads. I quite like "some" scoobs but on the whole they are very much the choice of the chav these days. I've never owned a scoob, though my brother and a mate had one. I've had an M3 Evo, Prelude VTEC, Clio 172, Porsche 944 Turbo the list goes on.... I've got to a point now where I can't be bothered to spend thousands on a car. I have a 2 grand Vectra to get me to work and back (100 miles a day round trip) and I WILL get a Golf VR6 for a dedicated Ring/Track car. The Vectra is cheap to run/fix and when it eventually dies I'll just bu

UPDATE!! Dealer just called me. Engine is now as silent and quiet as it ever was!!! So, intermitent knocking!!! -
Spoke to VW, they said "they never go wrong". That's crazy as tensioners WILL become worn, thus wearing/braking the chain. Spoke to the specialist - he 'recommended' the change at 100k as a good time to do it. I dunno.....weird. VW should have really changed the tensioners though every 40k or so miles - that way there would never be any of these problems. [ Edited Wed Mar 30 2005, 02:27PM ]

Looking at getting a Golf VR6. Done my homework and spoke to a very knowledgeable guy at Stealth Racing. He recommends camchain change, clutch and new head gasket at 100k miles. Total cost is £1400. I will be using the car is a stripped out Nurburgring car. Why oh why didn't VW include the Cam chain tensioners as part of the service schedule?!?!? Once agin specialists have to clear up the mess of main dealer crappy servicing!!!!! x)

All VW VR6 owners.... I'm in the process of *possibly* buying a Golf VR6. Here is the spec: 1998 R reg VR6 Highline, 94k miles. The car idled fine and sounded smooth. I took it out for a test drive - I did not thrash the car but it was a good, vigorous drive. when I got back from the test drive we turned it off. when we started it again there was a tapping/clakking/knocking noise on tick over. It sounded external to the block but cannot be 100% I'm thinking Cam-chain/tensioners however am reluctant to buy the car in case it isn't. Any advice from those in the know???
