    I stick by first suggestion then. When the fans do kick in, are they quite or roar like a jet fighter? The VR has a three speed fan and sometimes the slow speeds don't activate properly.

    I didn't mean it like that. I thought the garage was blameing the poor fuel comsumption on the head gasket. You say both the oil and water seem fine. Are you loosing/using much of either? Is the garage 'just local', a vw specialist or VW themselves?

    doesn't sound like the HG to me. if you remove "head gasket had gone, as the" from your opening paragraph it makes just as much sense. G12 antifreeze is pink so can easily give an orangey apperance once a little old. my suggestion would be to simply replace the thermostat and go from there. 90 isn't overheating it's a good operating temp.

    should be two LEDs along the bottom of the switch, green means front is on, yellow back.

    got them from baileysport. it's just around the corner form I used to work. mine weren't samco but where good quality with round edges. I can pop in on Thursday/Friday and see what the score is?

    the cross is a vacuum line which isn't there on earlier cars. something to do with emission controls I think. the blank socket is replaced with a heating element on models destined for cold climates.
