some time since i posted on here! 5 yrs after getting my VR 'bugs', the scruffiest VR in cheshire, i traded her in at the weekend for a 2002 V5. with 167k on the clock (99k when i bought her) the chain tensioners finally began to give in last week. it gets to the point, when only half your dash lights up, 3 of your windows don't work, you have a dented front wing due to the missus' bad driving, your auto gearbox indicator has given up the goose, and your chains are squealing, when you know it's time to call it a day. had to make a quick decision and found a minty V5 with 67k on the clock. and

Nearly a year and a half since I posted this thread. Bugs has now done 150k miles, chains still rattling and a few more rust spots appearing, but still going good :-)

i had a 1.8 gl mark 3 and was deeply impressed with the reliability. got to know the mechanics a bit then went into porsches. started doing a 100-mile commute and an 18mpg 5 litre porsche wasn't the best for that, so plumped for a VR6 as a compromise commuter car. still smiling - apart from at the petrol pump... duncs

i'd expect you can pick up the seal separately, why don't you go into a dealer and get them to look up the part number on their system? i'd expect the seal to be cheap although i've had vw parts from lodge sports before, they are based in the northwest. duncs

i had something similar. with me, it turns out it was the drainage hose from the sunroof drains - basically instead of being one part taking the water out of the car, it fits into a connector which is just at the top of the passenger footwell by the bodywork. this connector can come loose from the hose, duh! had to take half the dash off to discover it. a bit of fiddling later and putting the hose back into the connector, and hey presto, problem fixed. i'd suggest you check that too. carpets are still drying out 3 months later, mind.... duncs

i'm on the m56 on the way in and out of salford most days. in the past year and a half i only saw one vr on my travels!

bugs is now on about 132,000 on an m-plate and due in for a service on thurs. still runs as sweet as a nut! duncs

hi guys my vr has about 131k on the clock now and last year was flagged in the MOT that the wheel bearings may need attention. my questions are :- are wheel bearings a common failure in high miler golf 3's? what should i expect to pay to get both rear done, and is it advisable to also get discs replaced at the same time? cheers duncs

I have heard there's some VW event in the Northwest/Cheshire area soon, anyone know anything about it?
-
I've now isolated the leak, it appears to be a trickle of water which runs down the side of the passenger footwell and then into the carpet. Hard rain brings about 1 inch of water along the passenger footwell. Likely windscreen seal on passenger side?

NPM i'm with you on the BMW 7-series some are looking serious bargains right now. Looking at my list I realise just how erratic my car choices have been :- Citroen AX (tin can!) Renault 11 (busted stereo forced me to use a ghetto blaster on batteries on the passenger seat!) Rover 216 (worst buy ever, value depreciated like a stone) Peugeot 206CC (great until everyone else bought one) Toyota RAV4 (school run saddo) VW Golf 3 1.8 GL (my love of Mk 3's began here) Porsche 944 (drove like a go-cart) Porsche 928 (wheel spins at 80mph :-)) VW Golf Mk 3 VR6

Hi guys, advice please. I don't have a garage, so my VR6 lives outside. Heavy rain over the weekend, and on taking my VR6 out today, I noticed about 1.5-2 inches of water on the passenger side footwell - both front and rear :-( No obvious signs of ingress - doorcards, seats etc all dry, as is the parcel shelf and area around the windscreen. No evidence of a fault with the windscreen seal, it is the original windscreen (my VR is a 1995 M-plater). Had the car serviced 6 months ago and had the sunroof drains cleared out then, is it likely they'd have blocked again so soon? I'm a bit foxed, any

Ok, apologies for another 'who has' thread, but I'm genuinely interested to see how much life I can squeeze out of Bugs. I read somewhere you can get in excess of 250k on a cared-for Golf Mk3 engine, not sure about the VR6 though. Please indicate mileage and if you've had chains done/new engine. Mine is M-reg, 127k miles, no chains or engine work *gulp*

i might well go as it's only down the road from me in chester. is there a link to it anywhere?
-
I'm getting more noise from the engine lately, particularly when the engine is idle. No noticeable loss of power, just more tappety. Do you think it's an indicator that I could do with an oil top up? I do 100 miles a day, engine is on 125k now, chains haven't been done, car still pulls sweetly no signs of slippage. Ta.

i have a similar issue with the driver's side front wing and need it off to sort out a dent, however only joy i've had so far is £350 for a bodyshop to do it so it'll stay dented for a while lol
-
crivens, gaz, you mean you park the VR and use that old scrap daily? poor man. my VR -is- my daily driver! duncs

alright dutchboy i get my vr serviced at awesome gti in irlam, i think they have a bodyshop there too, might be worth contacting? i have a pretty well-regarded bodyshop in my village (tattenhall) it's attached to a toyota dealer but they did some work on my 4x4 and it's a sweet tidy job. they aren't cheap though!

hi folks my VR is M-reg. should it have heated side mirrors which come on when i switch the heated rear window button? also should a buzzer sound if i open the door having left my lights/half lights on at all? i remember having an M-reg Golf GL a few years back and it had heated mirrors and a buzzer when you left the lights on. weren't these included on the VR or are mine just not bloomin' working? ta duncs

keep it. i was thinking about a mk4 or a corrado but this is the second mk3 golf i've had and i do think the build quality is legendary. i was worried about the running cost i.e. fuel consumption a little but, well, i gave up smoking, so that should sort that one! i am going to keep bugs for sure, 121k on the clock, still going and still giving me a smile on my face :-)

Oil change.... Am I imagining things???
duncs replied to dubberVR6's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
i agree with highline, i just had my VR serviced at awesome yesterday - first full oil change since Jan. prior to it, i was worrying the chains were needing doing, the engine was tapping so badly, but after the service, bugs is running soooo sweet! my main service at awesome was £245 but that included some work to fix a bodyshell leak in 3 places too. the off-the-shelf quote for service was about 50 or so quid cheaper than the vw stealer. friendly bunch at awesome, too, they know their stuff. duncs -
hi brock i think there have been a few threads on this before, and some VR's run cooler than others. my '95 golf VR runs at about 75 max, so like yours, and oil is around 92. the figures overall don't tend to vary regardless of how i drive the car and it's still running sweet with 117k on the clock. happy ventoing duncs

hi folks in the wet, bugs has developed an annoying leak :-( when driving i notice a trickle of water running down the passenger footwell on the side just before the door. when stationary, i also notice water drips coming from just behind the rear passenger light in the boot (where the bolts are attaching the parcel shelf housing). when braking, water then drips out from the passenger side seat belt housing onto the passenger seat. erm? i wonder if this is a leak in the windscreen seal which when i drive is pushing water along the inside of the car? does anyone have any ideas are windscreen se

p.s. oil light's just come on. time to buy some more of the black stuff!
