  1. Thanks for the link! Haven't tried that yet, as the car actually starts and runs if I disconnect then reconnect the positive terminal - which means that the key chip is being read..
  2. Update: After speaking to VW, several tuning firms, ECU firms etc.. no one seems to have an answer other than sending the ECU off to have the immobiliser removed. I have a chap from AMT Auto Electrics coming to see the car on Friday so will give another update then, In the meantime I have a question: Did the OEM immobiliser come with a separate fob in 1995? I have two standard keys, and there is no other way to switch off the immobiliser..
  3. Hey Folks, Been a while since I was here but hope you can help! So I seem to have a not so rare immobiliser issue but cannot find any resolution on the forum. Problem: Car was standing for a few months waiting for an MOT, started ok and did a few short journeys, then battery went dead. Charged battery and eventually bought a new one, however when I start the car the immobiliser kicks in after a couple of seconds. Pretty sure this is an OEM immobiliser and my keys are standard old style - key with moulded plastic and no obvious battery to replace. I have a workaround which is to disconnect
  4. I recently noticed my zorst was blowing near the cat. When up on the ramps I see there's a capped nut that's rusted off a small inspection / monitoring port at the rear end of the cat. Can I get a replacement easily? Is this port actually used in MOT's or other inspections, because if not should I just weld it closed?
  5. I think I payed about £240 and I got them direct from Eibach the supplier here in the UK. As it was early summer when I bought them I'm not too sure of the final price. Now that they're on - WOO HOO! Money well spent. Immediate difference in car handling - she sits A LOT firmer on the road and there is no noticable roll at high speed on bends. Putting the power on in tight corners, I'm having to get to learn the car handling characteristics all over again. Steering is noticably firmer. I've got the Eibach 30mm dropped springs with OEM shocks, the Eibach anti-roll kit really does complet
  6. Thanks for that Pete. What about at the front end, ie changing any other bushes, linkages whilst changing the front roll bar?

  8. Hey folks, I'm replacing my roll bars with the Eibach kit. Noticed in the fitting kit that new linkages are not provided. Whilst the car is up on the ramp, what else should I replace? I replaced the rear axle bushes with OEM items last year. Is it worth getting poly bushes?
  9. Hey Jezmoz, I don't think anyone is ignoring you advice, in my case this is only a trial. Haven't had time to change the CAI location yet or look at improving air flow to the wing. Must say that the car runs and sounds better with this set up versus stock air box. Would be interesting to see if there was a way of venting the wing without cutting into the side of it.
  10. Why is the stock CAI useless? Is there not a clear air gap to the underneath of the car?
  11. Only current observation is that there are two bends in the hose but I didn't have to crush it to fit around the headlight as suggested in the fitting guide in members section. If this way is preferable to mounting in the bumper then I may shorten the hose
  12. Couple of pics of the trial fit [lightbox=../../e107_files/public/1171635403_4052_FT159671_dsc00203.jpg][/lightbox] [lightbox=../../e107_files/public/1171635477_4052_FT159671_dsc00202.jpg][/lightbox]
  13. Hey Folks, I've just fitted a Pipercross Viper cold air induction kit and have trial fitted the air hose to the stock intake location in the wing, rather than mounting the hose to the lower bumper grills as per the guide on this site. My main reason for doing this was fear of water being sucked up into the engine from mounting a high pressure intake hose so low down (given our charming UK winter weather and all..). So has anyone an opinion on whether this is a sensible thing to do versus having the hose mounted in the bumper? Must say she purr's nicely at higher revs and the acceleration is m
  14. Apologies if this subject had been done in spades but the search engine is not working for me.. get 'authorisation required' message. Anyway - my aerial is looking rather shabby, rubbers ripped and spring a bit bent. Is this easily replaceable? How does it come off? Had the bright idea of fitting a BMW style shark fin aerial - does anyone know if these are available to fit a Golf? The BMW ones fit a curved roof whereas the golf is flat.
  15. I wanted to improve the squishy ride of my VR and decided upon Eibach springs with a 30mm drop. As the previous owner had replace the OEM dampers 18mths ago I decided to keep them as this reduced the cost of the upgrade. Was a bit worried that there would be an imbalance in suspension performance but this is not the case. With my new setup, I find the car rides smoother over small bumps but holds the road WAY better when cornering - taking corners at speed and under acceleration a lot more confidently now. The 30mmm drop gives the car a very subtle change in stance - much prefer the stealth
  16. I've just replaced my original 'zaust with a Magnex cat back system. Must say I'm very impressed. I was expecting to hear a big difference in tone, especially at higher revs but there really isn't much difference. Engine feels slightly more responsive. Next on my upgrade agenda will be a cold air induction kit which I hope will add another small gain.
  17. Over revving issue now solved. Sorted compeletely by replacing throttle body. Buying direct from Siemens VDO (OEM manufacturer) proved about 40% cheaper than sourcing part from VW (G&S don't stock them). Got the old ODB2 TB if any one wants it for rebuilding, if that's possible.. 8-)
  18. Had an altercation with a central reservation barrier.. :-( Resulted in a nasty scrape down the side of my '96 mystic blue VR6, reckon I hit a bolt which has given my near side front wing a nasty ding either side of the wheel arch. Question: Is a replacement wing specific to a VR6 or can I use one off of any Golf of that year? Also, is it a bolt on/off panel or is welding involved?
  19. Hey All, Being new to this forum, I would be very interested in seeing RR results. My initial interest is seeing the gains made to a stock set-up by adding cold air induction (e.g. BMC) and sports exhaust (Magnex, Milteck etc). Having seen that these mods are 'a must' on a VR6, it would be good to see the factual gains above the grin factor gains from hearing more engine noise.
  20. Thanks guys, sounds like Magnex is a good choice. Lifetime guarantee plus over £100 cheaper wins over the SuperSprint. Will try and find a deal for exhaust plus suspension upgrade - I find the stock suspension WAY too soft and wallowing the engine performance..
  21. You rate Miltek over Magnex? How come?
  22. Hello All.. Has anyone had a Magnex cat back 'zorst on a VR6? If so, any comments? Heard good reports from local tuning shop but would like to get an honest report from a VR6 owner. Also interested in the Supersprint system - however, this only comes with a 3 year guarantee. Has anyone had one of these for any length of time? If so, any corrosion problems with their mild steel?
  23. On start up the car revs to about 1800rpm then wavers a bit before settling to around 1000-1100rpm for a couple of mins then down to 900. The issue is when the engine is warm and I've accelerated in any gear - after I come off the gas, the revs stay between 1700 to 2000, thus pulling the car on the flat. Out of gear the car gradually comes back to idle around 900. I've got a good deal on a new throttle body, should be able to get it fitted & calibrated all in for about £200. As the car has done 114K now, that might be wise huh? Thanks for the offer of the VAG-COM
  24. What is a Vag-Com reader? Is that the fault code device that plugs into the dash by the lighter?
  25. The electical cables to the throttle body. The throttle body is much different to a carb on a Mk2. My problem isn't so much a stuck throttle, more like the ECU is over compensating when the engine is under load.
