Changed the pressure switch for a second hand one (£20) and regassed the system - fault indications on climate control panel now gone and it all seems to work fine. Thanks to all for the advice. 500Comet

Thanks all for the info. about the "flashing Indicator"- it was only a long shot that it may have contained some useful coded information. Have found a faulty pressure switch and that the system contained much too much gas. Will see what happens when we have a chance to put these faults right, which will probably not be until the harvest is in and there are no more combines/balers/fork-lifts/tractors to fix and I'm not at work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. However with all this overtime it should give me more than enough cash to fix the car !!!!

Thanks Focker-out, do you know if the Mk3 Golf Climate control system is like the VR6 - it would be easier to get detailed data on this than VR6 ? We have the econ button by the way. I am led to believe that counting the pattern of flashes indicating a fault on the climate control display can be interpreted to give an indication of the fault, if the codes are known. This system certainly works very simply with a LED on some cars I have worked on. Does anybody know about this feature please. Think however we have figured out now what every switch/sensor/fan etc does and are about to regas the

Thanks, but first we would like to try to understand how the climate control system works, but will now have to try to figure it out by using the circuit diagrams I have for VR6 on the CD, which only seems to give data for 1993/1994 cars. This information does not say it covers climate control, (but there are two diagrams - one for simple air-con and one possibly for climate control - it does not say !!!) I also have detailed information for a 1995 Audi A4 climate control system which could possibly work on much the same principles. If we can hack this by a combination of the diagrams for VR6

On my 1995 VW VR6 the climate control works sometimes, so the system must be charged OK but shows a fault indication when the ignition is switched on. Is there any way I can find out what causes the fault indicator on the climate control panel to flash (the compressor clutch does not come in) when there is a failure of the system to work. Sometimes however the compressor clutch does come in and then the air is cooled as normal. Where can I get information on the climate control system please - section 87 is missing for some reason from the CD workshop manual I have - and this is the section w

VR6 Climate Control (Air Con) Compressor
matty replied to matty's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thanks for the info. What does IIRC mean please? and do you mean I can not convert a Mk 3 Golf compressor to a VR6 one by changeing the end casting over and the clutch - the casting of the centre part of the compressor looks the same and I had been told by a local dealer who fixes air-con systems who wanted to sell me a new Mk3 Golf compressor which he had in stock, that the bits could be changed over. I dont want to take the second hand one I have put a deposit on apart to find out, because then the man who supplied it would naturally not take it back. Thanks Again 500comet -
Sorry if this is in twice, but have previously put this in the incorrect catagory, and can find no way of moving it to this one. My compressor has developed a leak and a new one costs about £300. I have been offered a fairly cheap, nearly new compressor for a Mk3 Golf and have been told that I can change the clutch assy or mabe only the pulley and also the end aluminium casting where the pipes connect, for the ones on my old compressor because all the "middle bits" are the same. ( for the same compressor manufacturer) Has anybody tried this, and are the fixing bolts to the car compatible? Als

My compressor has developed a leak and a new one costs about £300 I have found a nearly new compressor for a Mk 3 Golf at a good price and have been told that I can change the clutch assembly and the end where the pipes connect for those on my old compressor and it will be OK, because all the "middle bits " are the same (for the same compressor manufacturer). Has anybody done this and if so what are the snags please? Also is it difficult to get the old one off my car please and where are the fixing bolts - it's not very obvious looking in from the top. Hope someone can help - there may be som

hi cabrioman. how do you receive and see a pm. and how do i . is it an email or what or how do iget to thro' the vr6site?

Hi cabrioman, looking at your message again I thought "ym" was some fancy message format, but now realise it was "my" backwards. Hope you got my PM.

Thanks for reply about aircon compressor, but have difficulty understanding internet jargon. Son's mate says I do not have the facilities you mention. Can we sort costs etc by email or telephone please which I understand - I have big problems even finding how to send this message and never seem to be able to navigate the site easily. For instance I can not now find your last message which seems to have fallen off the end with no way of asking for another page!!! My email is mattynjane@btinternet.com

Thanks for the info. about the belt. I have made enquiries and been told that The Gates Manufacturers belts are as follows for the VR6 :- No A/C 7Pk 1288 Prrt No. 78388 With A/C 7DPk 1363 Part No 78394D I believe that the 1288 and 1363 refer to the length, the "D" means it is double sided and the "7" is the number of ribs. Hope this info. is correct and of use to somebody who wants to run without the compressor while problems are being sorted. 500 comet

Thanks for the offer of the compressor - what is its background - I gather also the VR6 one is different from the Mk3 Golf,Passat etc mainly because the pipes are in a differnt place. I am not very good at driving this site, so how do I find your telephone number /email address so we can discuss the details of the sale etc. 500 Comet

My 1998 VR6 has just had a new Aircon radiator and now the compressor has blown all the gas/oil out of its bearing seal. It is said that a second hand compressor will not be any good because its bearings will have dried out and it will very soon (a week maybe) do the same as the one on the car. Second hand one £100 with 3 months guarentee, new one £300 from Swedish and German - it may be worth the gamble because I work with air con. systems so regas not a problem !! what do you think ? What is VW part no for a compressor please, and how does it come off the car - my handbook has this sectio

It's usually the alternator providing lots of Amps to the battery just after cold start up when the charging system thinks the battery is low. The output from the alternator can then be 50 or 60 amps and the windings "flex" under the high current for a bit until the battery charges up to voltage. If the fan belt is slack on most cars it slips and squeals just after a cold start for the same reason. My son's VR6 has also been making this noise since the Wintery weather came and I think and hope its a natural function of the alternator !!! Matty. VINCENT COMET 500 (that's my bike).
