H&R Coilovers help
lewisvr6 replied to 1998VR6yellow's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
look on ebay n buy one mate, or demon tweeks do them i think. i bleev ther universal sizes.. not worth manglin it.. sounds stupid but if the kit is fairly new u can normally turn it with just your hand. thats what i did -
right ive decided on wheels, somethin nice n standard lookin, these borbet cb's i think... i dont know whether to get 16's or 17's, im tempted by 17's as i think theyll look betta as theyll fill the arch but will it affect acceleration noticably?? plus my car is lowered so wil 17x7 be a problem on the arches??

which coilovers for £400-£500?
lewisvr6 replied to VR6gaz's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
ive got a set of weitec hicon gtx's on mine n cant fault them.. handles excellently and is still very smooth. the kit is adjustable coilies (40mm to 70mm) on front and adjustable shocks and springs on the back.. about 450 quid fitted for mine. -
hi, ive just had a 2 box jetex exhaust fitted but its sitting a tad low n not quite central.. wil any exhaust place sort this out?? i might just be bein picky, ill put some pics up 2moro. cheers
-
awesome. thas good to hear cos mines prity low at the back. did u fit it urself??
-

how much chain noise is normal??
lewisvr6 replied to lewisvr6's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
oh n its a late 97 R reg model if that makes a difference? -
sorry guys i kno this has been covered loooooads before but i just wondered how much chain noise is natural for a vr engine. my car is on 100k with 12 vw service stamps, only the best oil etc.. the other day i noticed a VERY VERY slight noise down by gearbox. people r on here sayin they r just about able to hear their chains wit the radio on!! but n i can literally only just about hear them with my ear literally down in the engine bay on the cover! totally quiet with bonnet shut let alone inside the car!. am i bein paranoid?? the car runs perfectly n hasnt developed any problems. also i got a

'water temp was just under half way i meant'
-
cheers guys, helped to put my mind at rest. i kno the vr engine takes a lot of punishment n is very strong but ill be annoyed if it has broken it cos the engine is perfect in mine, 11 vw service stamps since new etc.. the oil temp didnt go above 92 at any point n the water was just under half way when i topped it up so hopefully itll b fine.. gettin the tensioner bolt on the chains done, at the same time as coolant leak and thermo, which will hopefully cure the very slight rattle i got, fingers crossed!!!
-
oh n i didnt put the water straight in.... left it for bout 15 minutes before puttin water in if thas ne betta?
-
cheers guys, hopefully itll be fine. it still ran perfectly, not stutterin or soundin wierd, still very smooth. it must of had some water in it, just the water tank was empty. which is what i think is leaking actually. through the join in the middle!.. it overheated cos the thermo was stuck shut. its in vw specialist now..... n hopefully theyl tel me that my timing chain rattle is just the hydraulic tensioner bolt!! fingers crossed!

is it a bad idea to put cold water in a warmed up engine?? is it likely to cause damage. i got a leak n didnt have much choice at the time as it had hardly any in it n i was at the side of the road.. thanks

water disappeared and VERY loud whirring noise
lewisvr6 replied to lewisvr6's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
i filled it up n the the ONLY place i can see water coming out is through one of the joiners in the top rad pipe, its not comin out newher else.. it starts pissin out once the system is pressurised at normal operating temp.. has vr6 got a second fan that comes on, a bigger one cos thas exactly what it sounded like. not a mechanical whirring. n it went off when i stopped drivin n it cooled down.. n cud hear the other fan runnin.. good thing this did happen cos when i lifted the bonnet i noticed the dreaded chain rattle!! very faint but def there. cudnt hear it thru the sound deadenin under the -
just drivin home a second ago and to my horror noticed the water gauge was on 100 n also noticed the car was makin a very strange whirring noise (like n fan noise but very very loud) pulled over n all of the coolant had gone! so obviously a severe split in a pipe somewhere. the oil temp was sittin at 92 so luckily i think i caught it early.. wud it have caused any damage to the head with the water at 100..? couldnt of been like it very long n once engine was off it dropped to 50 within 30 seconds. it wasnt idling wierd or nethin n the really loud fan noise cut out at about 70 degrees n u cud s

hi.. does any1 know of a good custom exhaust fitter in the south east. or any1 had a nice job done on there vr in the kent area?? i was gonna go for a magnex system but thinkin i may go for a custom made job. also im after an upswept dtm style, is this a bad idea? ive heard that they cause problems with water goin down into them?? cheers

is it definatly rubbin on the spring plate n not the arch?? bcos if its the spring plate it shudnt matter if you got weight in the car or not bcos its below the spring n doesnt move.
-
yea it is a pain. i got the spacers on the back now which has fixed it but i wana drop the back a bit more so prob gona start doin it agen. only need literally mm clearance cos mine ony used to rub when the wheels were under load goin round a corner
-
the garage that fitted it did the camber but it hasnt moved it out far enough.
-
ive got the weitec hicon kit which is coilies at front and adjustable shocks and springs on back. its not rubbing cos of the height its set at. its rubbin on the side of the tyre where the rear spring plate is, must be wider than a normal setup or somethin. got my spacers comin today so hopefully thatll fix it =)
-
yea it is satin silver, got a very slight blue tint to it [lightbox=../../e107_files/public/1192521039_4558_FT200614_ssl21077.jpg][/lightbox]

yea im gona get spacers all round i think. dnt fancy rolling the arches cos theres loadsa room under there once its lifted a bit.. the kit lowers to 70 n i think thas what its set on atm.. only wanted it about 40!!!! hehe. yea ill ring weitec tomoro.im guessin its prity easy to do seein as there brand new coilies, wont be seized or nethin!
-
hi guys, jus got my vr6 lowered on weitec hicon coilovers (very impressed btw, id recommend) but cos its gone so low the rear wheels rub on the strut (especially round corners) n the fronts rub on the arches when i turn the wheel.. i suppose maybe 5mm spacers would cure this?? only 100 quid with all bolts from H&R. The front has gotta come up neway cos atm its just waaay too low, its on standard wheels n the arches overhang them, ltierally inches off the ground. cant get over ne speed bumps n the sump catches the floor on my drive.. r the kits supposed to come with the C-spanners to adjust
