I had spluttering problem after i changed my plugs. turned out to be leads replaced them with new set and runs perfectly. When it was spluttering i stopped left the engine runing and looked under the bonnet in the dark revved it by and and numer 6 cylinder was having its own sparkler show, it ran fine before plug change so presume the old leads gave up the ghost when being pulled around as removed and refitted the lead several times to check it was in corectly.

press clip remove plug, now there will be a u shaped clip runiing through the plastic mounting holding the sensor in slide this out to remove the sensor.

If you think a car is designed for 12v and a mig welder is sticking in 240 odd volts you do risk frying the electronics.

New to Golf Mk3 VR6 & problems on the 2nd day!
philtvr replied to a topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
The noise after the car is turned off sounds like the auxilary water pump located (as you look at the engine) on the back right hand corner. You should see the water pipes running to it with a plug in the top. -
I have found two holes in sthe sill around the jacking points. I have cut out the rot and have made two new peices to weld in. Heres my question i have restored a few pre 75 cars from ground up but this is my first 'Modern' car. I plan to disconnect the ECU, the alternator and the battery as well as placing the earth clamp as close to the patch as possible. Anything else i should conside unplugging? thanks in advance

Loses power on corners when low on petrol
philtvr replied to philtvr's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
you normally either have a swirl pot or a sump in the tank so there is always fuel for the pump, filling up before it gets down to qurter of a tank, i imagine , is not what VW intended as this would be empty on the gauge if this was the case, i presume its crud in the filter or a dodgy pipe somewhere. -
I would start by replacing the thermostat housing as is knackered anyway then monitor water usage again. Garages can do a test for exhaust gas in the the coolant so ask for one of those but try to be there to see the result. If it comes back clear there still is a chance it has gone though. The unresponiveness could be an air leak so check all the pipes are on properly and the clips are tight.

When my car gets low on petrol 1/4 -1/8 full , it will cut out going round tight corners then when straight again it kicks back in and alls fine. Once i fill up again with petrol i have no troubles till the level again gets low. Now by my amazing powers of deduction i realise its to do with petrol moving in the tank as i go round corners so there is no fuel to be drawn by the pump, is this a common problem easy fix???

Help with rear struts assembly
philtvr replied to a topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
I would say yes as when the suspension moves the bumpstop will move with it then when the bumpstops needed it will get compressed. As long as the dust covers covers the shock shaft its ok. -
Rear N/S Brake Overheating!*?
philtvr replied to pete23's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Either hand brake not off properly or the fluid isn't returning out of the caliper, is the hose new may of collapsed inside? -
i have a problem the back have gone on fine but the front there is not enough thread to put the nut on whn the from leg is back together. The problem is where the top mount bearing sits on top of the coilover cap. On the VW leg the bearing fits onto the shock shaft on the coliover the bearing sits on top of the aluminium cap this loses about 1 cm of thread which is what i need to put the top nut on.
