I've just tried my VR6 with Sainsburys 97 RON fuel and am now getting 25mpg rather than 22mpg, and much smoother too. I think this actually works out cheaper in the long run, as I am paying 3p / litre more, but getting better performance.

I am now 10 days in to owning my VR6 and I am now becoming obsessed with fuel economy. I took this into account when buying the car, and am enjoying caning the octane whenever the oppurtunity arises . I only have a 10 minute drive to work at an avg of 40mph so I don't really get the chance to on a day to day basis, as th oil temperature never gets high enough. However on longer drives I (sadly) start staring at the fuel economy and trying to get the highest figure I can. The temptation is to put the car in the highest gear possible and drive like a mini-cab driver with the revs are below 2.

I had a rummage around under the sink last night, and caned a can of 1001 carpet foam over the whole interior, which has worked a treat in getting rid of the pong for now. Also the seat cloth now looks like new, as all the dust is out. I think the next course of action is a full interior valet, or try and borrow a steam cleaner for the head liner, and a new set of carpet mats for £32 from VW. A quick spruce with Autoglym's interior cleaner, also gives a nice lemon freshness.

I am now a week into my VR6 ownership and all is immaculate ... apart from a few odour problems. Now given that the car has done 140,000 miles I am sure many would wish that this was all that was wrong with their own vehicles, but things are a bit musty. I wish you could buy an air fresher called 'new car interior', I don't want it to smell of vanilla, fresh pine or lemon with a hint of must. Currently I am getting 'eau de mini-cab' with hints of cheap air freshner and base notes of dust and mild sweat. Any tips on getting the VR6 smelling as good as it sounds?

I bought the P reg (actually an 'N' reg Jan 1996), which considering the mileage was in really good condition, 3 owners (1st up to 12 months ago) the other two work at the same BMW dealership. I had it MOT'd before I bought it and got £250 off the asking price as it needed new discs and pads at the front. I cannot get over how smooth the engine is, and the mpg seems better than I feared. Just neds a little tidying up and then we can have some fun! Thanks for all your advice.

HI, I am loking at 2 VR6 s on Friday. I only have a budget of £1300, and am looing for reliability over looks or resale value. Oh and I want 5 doors. 1995 N reg 119000 miles, Highline, Purple with leathers etc, Good interior, some bubbling on wheel arches, VW history upto 60,000 only, new clutch. Seller has owned vehicle for 6 months Selling because can't afford to insure as main car. Needs wheel bearing. Debadged Grill. £1400. 1996, P reg, 140000 miles FSH with receipts, good condition, new ABS and front tires, 5 dr black. Good interior. £1250. Owner works for BMW dealership, Finance dept.
