  1. For what its worth, thought id report that the VR has been used daily and its not missed a beat up (hope i have not cursed it now!). Probably get it serviced soon though. Other than that...happy days.
  2. Finally get to enjoy the car now! Head gasket change cost me £750 all in. Bare in mind that includes travel costs etc as well.
  3. So after a head gasket change, new thermostat and new radiator fan the car is back on the road thanks to Tony Walters. I also changed the crank sensor today and it seems to have solved the starting up issue, so its happy days for now.
  4. Hoping theres very little to do but i guess you never know what else could be unearthed. Thanks for the info though...at least i know what to ask Tony. Will the front end need to come off...i.e. Headlights, grill and bumper?
  5. Its a tough one - im in no position to accuse the seller but its still a horrendous coincidence the head gasket fails as soon as i take ownership. I actually swapped my e30 tourer with cash the other way as the vr was so 'clean' compared to most ive seen out there. But the morel of this story i guess is never judge a book (or car) but its cover (or metal). Tony off of here will be carrying out the work to get the old girl back on the road and the cost is not far off what ickyketseddie had been charged. Is there anything i can do while head is off?
  6. Yup. Fans kick straight into over drive, pressure builds up and pours through the overflow on expansion bottle...showed no signs of this when i drove it daily (albeit for a week) and then BANG this happens. Is there reason to believe the seller would have known about this?
  7. The issue is a lot worse than a dodgy starter or blown out crank sensor...just had the car checked over and it turns out the head gasket has gone anyway!
  8. Not going to be needing a mechanic for a while now guys...Tony came over today and diagnosed the car has having a head gasket failure. That was the result of a compression test.
  9. I see what you mean, and i would do the basic service myself but i should have mentioned there are a couple of other bits that need looking at and seeing as ive only had the car for a week, i thought it would be a good opportunity for someone more skilled to carry out the jobs and give me their opinion of the car overall i.e. Its in good health etc. I had a good look around the car when i bought it but there may have been something i missed for instance.
  10. So there i am driving along minding my own business when out of the blue the fans kick in and go into over-drive, turning at a very high speed. Got home and had a look under the bonnet and noticed the coolant bottle it leaking very slightly. Simple fix of new coolant bottle or is there something a bit more serious judging by how the fans went into over-drive? Any help/advice would be grately appreciated.
