  1. hello guys, just inherited a golf vr6 with bust headgasket. now i originally put the engine in for the guy as it was a tired 16valve so i'm handy with the spanners, i'm just not sure what headgasket to get as a replacement as i've heard the elring mls gasket is a better option, is this true and where do i get one from? thanks

  4. bit of a newbie question here... whats the differences between the obd1 and 2's? visual, performace, problems? i have a stripped 3 door vr6 (minus its engine box and 2 looms that was a 95' coil pack engine, is this obd 1 or 2?) i presume its ok to put either engines back into it without any problems? the car stands me at nothing so it would be a shame not to build another vr6 out of it and return it to the road again...shell is mint!
  5. yip, as above, the loom is the hardest, especially if you fit both, tricky to get out without slackening off the servo, even harder to get back in but not impossible. fit the loom(s) before fitting the motor. fit the power steering pipe from a vr as in my case the 16v one blocked the oil filter housing (the one with a banjo fitting onto the pump that runs along the front.) vr6 power steering bottle was slightly different to the 16 valve one, looks like a non vr6 type might hit the selector, not 100% on that but it was different.

  7. well its done and took me about 40 hours. included in the fitting was a sump gasket replacement, full service (obviously) on the engine with new gearbox oil and fitting the 2 looms from the vr to get full functions from the fan and the option to fit the aircon later if i want. just need to tape the 2nd loom up on the drivers inner wing as the covering that vw used has totally gone. only issue was a poor idle/stalling problem due to dirty icv and throttle body, easy fix and it was ALL well worth the effort, absolute joy to drive, shame its not mine :-(

  9. i have the clocks but there in km'h, should be able to change the dial faces for mph ones? didnt think the fuel pump was any different? 2 wiring looms to swap as the vr has a 3 speed fan on it with seperate relay pack.
  10. Oh and keep the 16v box to rob the final drive out of it.. Or aprently you can bolt the VR bell housing onto it so could a vr6 box be bolted to a 16 valves bell housing and used on a 16v motor?
  11. the fuse box and clock wiring is the same for both cars i think. and seen as how the 16 valve already has a hydraulic clutch, it should make things a little easier. i've got a little experience with engine swaps, i converted an 1100cc uno to full turbo spec in my youth lol put a mk3 golf gti 8 valve into a mk2 a few years back, converted an e36 bmw 325 to an m3 and a couple of fords and lancias in between so i'm handy with the spanners a little.
  12. exactly, and seen as how the car is modded, it makes sense to me the car in question already has this done to it..... full brake upgrade coilovers full s/s exhaust vento front end conversion full electric/heated bmw e46 convertible seats full bare metal respray with some colour coding and smoothing, good condition still. i have a donor car with 55k on the clock and aircon but i wont be fitting the aircon to the valver. once this has been done it paves the way for an R32 later maybe?

  14. at my disposal at the moment is a mk4 gt tdi 130, 2x 328 bmw's and a 16valve mk3 that i am converting to a vr6, this will be used as a daily, the 130 tdi 6 speed is quick with loads of torque and more enjoyable to drive than one of the 328 bm's (e46 328 semi auto saloon version) but does suffer from the usual performance problems that most of vw's tdi's suffer, faulty maf's, sticky actuators etc. you can zip about town with a return of about 42 mpg easily, something that isnt acheived with any of the others but the tdi isnt mine but is good fun to use. it wont excite you up the rev range like

  16. are the km/h and mp/h clocks the same internaly? can i just fit mp'h dial faces to an import set of clocks and can i change the mileage from kilometres to miles?
