  1. the water hit 110 when it overheated, been fine since. I do need to put more coolant in as i put one litre to about 5 litres of water. Glad to hear it not definately the head gasket. It was actualy someone who came to buy the car who noticed it.
  2. I got low on water the other day (seems to go low every month) and it overheated for the first time ever. It went to the 110 mark. Now there is a slight bit of mayo on the oil cap. No mayo on the dip stick, and water is ok bu then i have just refiiled. Someone mentioned it could just be a bit of condensation from over heating. Or is it the begining of the end for the head gasket, if so how long could it last and what the best price to get it done (i was quoted £800 !!)
  3. Ok, I took the inlet and rocker cover off, You were right not as bigger job as you might think. I found one piece which was quite big (10x5mm) so glad i got that, but the other piece which must of been the same size has gone. There was a black patch where it might have fell, so i think it had melted there and hopefully got chewed up by the chains. Poor cap design though, Keep an eye on your oil filler caps guys !
  4. Ok, is there any mods i could do at the same time to make it more interesting, Cams or flowed manifold?. Will i need to change the gaskets on the manifold and rocker
  5. Are you serious ?, Wont the bits just get trapped in the lift pump strainer thing. Does the bit the cap screws into come of seperately to the rocker cover, it looks as if it a seperate part. I would be able to reach the bits of plastic then as i can stil see them
  6. my 97 has had the sump sealed on but its leaking all over the place, i think the gasket is the safest option

Hi I just went to fill up my oil but noticed the filler cap was a bit seized, I got it off, but noticed some little tabs that hold in place have broken off, One I could see so tried to fish it out but it fell further down. Is there anyway i can get the plastic cover off that the cap screws into. If not what will happen if i fill up with oil now and these bits go into my engine. The piece i tried to get out was about 5mm by 3mm. I dont want to take the manifold off to get at a bit of palstic, but i also dont want them working the way through the engine. I am due a sump re-seal so maybe they wou
  8. Heres a pic, Its on the geabox side of the head, looks like its seeping oil from gasket, where is the rocker breather hose, is it on the back of the engine ?. If it was the head gasket would it last a few 1000 miles more, or is it urgent

I have had the car into the garage, he didnt have time to have proper look, but his first thoughts were head gasket, which was dripping down the back of the engine (there is oil on back of engine) but he admitted he didnt know the engine very well and they would charge £700 !. Could that quantity of oil leak from the head gasket without making it through to the water, and is it safe to drive. Or is there anyhwere else on the back of the engine where it could leak from, or if it was leaking from the bottom would the driveshaft throw it up the back of the engine. any info much appreciated, I SO

  11. wow thats perfect. So if oil is leaking from 7 the timing case seal would that put pressure on 8 the main seal. I dont mind topping up the oil every 500 miles but i dont want 8 to fail and pour oil all over the flywheel. Do you reckon you can re seal these parts without removing them, as a temp fix. And would the timing case have to be steam cleaned before re-fitting. Its just twigged you have to take the geabox & flywheel off to change the cam chains, mental !!
  12. was your clutch slipping before it went. The crankshaft oil seal went on my mk2 and would slip everytime the car got hot. Is the gearbox anymore difficult to get of than an average golf. Got it done for £120 on my mk2
  13. Ok, thanks. Is there any chance of that leaking onto the clutch or failing drastically. The reason i ask is that i am taking it to the alps for a holiday in a months time. 1700miles round trip, What would you do ?
  14. The colour is gold and dosent smell that bad. "rear main oil seal or lower timing casing" this means nothing to me, as i'm used to old 8v's. Is there anywhere i can get a diagram so i no what i am up against. cheers for the info
  15. after checking the oil level, its not that low, so its a possibility that its gear oil
  16. I got an oil leak coming out between the gear box and engine, its dripping from the bottom of the bell housing ther is a bit around the sump gasket but not all the way around. Would this be the sump gasket or somthing worse. The clutch is not slipping, and i am fairly sure its engine oil. Any info much appreciated.
  17. I have been advised to do this when viewing a Vr6 to buy, but how easy is this ?, is it really reasonable to start taking plugs out of a car before you buy ?
