What sort of a knocking noise is it?? is it all the time?? could be the anti roll bar link is worn. The rubber wears and then the anti roll bar bangs about. Check that first they're only about 15 quid and easy to fit. Does it click when on full lock as this is a sure sign of a bust/worn cv joint.

What is this? where'd it come from?

Thanks. Turns out the plastic vent has been smashed so the temp sensor had worked its way out. -
Hello all, Could you please help. I walked back to my car the other day to see this wire with a connector in it hanging down. I'm not sure where its from, i've posted some pics so people can and hopefully advise me where to put it back. The wire originates from under the original airbox and then runs down into the wing. Its just about long enough to reach the water pump but i can't see anywhere that the thing should live. Its got a black two pin connector but then attached to that is a grey item ( see photo). Any help much appreciated.

I had the same problem (not being able to select first)on mine which was resolved when I replaced the gearbox mount. It might be worth checking if the mount is worn.

I think there are different codes for the different gearboxes and there are certainly a couple of different types in the MK3. The one for a vr6 is an 02A, or at least it is in mine. There's usually some floating around on ebay cheaply if you don't fancy paying dismantlers prices.

[poll] Best tyres for my vr.

I've just put some toyo proxes T1R's on and am very impressed. Good grip low noise, what more could you want? Just a tip but get a price off black circles fitted then find out which garage they selected for fitment. Then phone that garage and get them to beat the price. Protyre did for me they knocked another tenner off. Thanks Protyre -
Revs drop off then pick up again?
buttmrt replied to retr0dreaming's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Check the earths are connected well. I had the same thing recently with the revs diving up and down under braking when coming to a stop. It turned out the earth cable to the gearbox had worked loose and was moving around. Also check your battery is ok. -
Mine is currently at 152,000 miles and wasn't well looked after for the first 120,000 ish of those ( before my ownership), with no problems really. As long as the right stuff has been done to maintain the engine it should be fine.

Well its job done. I had to get a friend to help with the lifting of the gearbox. As lifting and moving it around on my own just wasn't gonna work. I had a jack underneath plus me and then a support beam at the top plus a friend. The last part where you have to line up the shaft with the clutch plate was a bit of a pain but with some wriggling it went in. It was just a question of when lifting the box having to tilt it and angle it to get the clearance. If you can get more room by removing more bits I would.

Hello all, I've just fininshed rebuilding the VR after doing the timing chains and now i've got a weird idle problem. It only occurs when the clutch is in and i'm braking to come to a stop (usually when i'm going quite slowly) the rev's seem to keep dipping, as if the engine wants to die. But then as soon as i've stopped with foot still on the brake and clutch still in it goes away and idles normally???!!! very confusing. I don't have access to VAG.com so has anyone seen this before? The engine had a new clutch, chains and guides, leads, plugs, all fluids etc. Apart from this niggling problem

cheers, couldn't believe how tight it was getting the damn thing into the correct place lol! the clutch is spot on centre so hopefully i'll get it back on tomorrow. Ive got a feeling it is gonna be a long day. bring on the Tetley!!! anymore tips people???

Hi all, i'm in the process of refitting the gearbox in my 97 VR. The box is supported by both a jack and a frame across top of engine bay. I've pretty much got it back to the right height for relocation with lots of blood sweat and tears. However now i'm really struggling to locate the splined shaft into the clutch plate and get the box all nicely on and lined up. Are there any hints and tips that might make things a bit easier?? thanks for any help

my timing marks don't line up with camshafts!!
buttmrt replied to buttmrt's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
thanks for the advice. So is the consensus to just line everthing up correctly and then turn to make sure its good? I'll have alook at the timing chain link also. thanks again -
Hi all, I'm in the process of doing my timing chains. Whilst I was stripping it down and locking the camshafts in place I noticed that the timing notch on the crankshaft was out by about half a centimetre before I could lock the camshaft in place. Should I be worried?. I've stripped the chains off but am not sure whether to set the timing properly lining up camshafts and crankshaft as it should be or to go with what was there in the first place as it seemed to be running fine. Any ideas? any help would be much appreciated
