Best course of action when doing timing chains
mrbeige replied to mrbeige's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Well, I've helped my mate do his chains in his Corrado VR, so not a novice. Got another mate who will be helping, he's done about 5 Corrados now, so is fairly hand with spanners. So, best to take the whole lot out then? That's what we did with the Corrado, but there is far less room in the bay in one of them. What about the front panel? -
Need to do the chains on Mrs B's VR, and want to know what the best course of action is? What I mean by that is, whether to leave the engine in place but just drop/lift the gearbox out, if indeed that is possible to do, or lift the engine and gearbox out completely? Someone has told me that it's 4-6 bots to remove the front panel, is that correct, and is it necessary. I plan to do the job over a weekend, as it is our daily. Also need to replace the clutch, leaky aux water pump, oil pump (that I'm convinced is on it's way out), and will probably do the 'stat housing and crackpipe while I'm at i

Sweet mate! looking forward to a closer look next weekend -

Does anyone have the pin out for the instrument cluster for a mk3? Cheers

Where did you get your charger from dude? The M90s I've seen all have a ridiculously long snout on them.

Cool, I'll check and clen the MAF. Plugs are only two weeks old, so they should be fine. When I changed the plugs I noticed some small cracks in the HT leads where they clip into the manifold plastic trim, could that cause a misfire like that? I would guess so??
-
Righto, I'll source another one and give that a whirl. Could it also be the HT leads?

Right guys, I think I might have a problem with the Golf VR. For a while now, just after starting from cold, the engine his a kind of whine about it, that clears after a mile or so. I kind of feel like it could be a tired oil pump, but not sure as there is no oil pressure gauge to determine low pressure. It almost sounds a bit tappety too, but again after a mile or so it's ok. So, tonight Mrs B tells me that the engine revs dipped a couple of times today again from cold, so I've just been outside to see if it did it for me, but thankfully not. BUT, whilst checking this other issue, I rev'd the

Fair play that's awesome! Crying with laughter too

Ditto! Very interested to here more

I think the M62 may be a better fit, as the M90 will scavenge more power from the crank

3rd the show cage comment, I wouldn't want big chunks of shiney metal flying around my head in a crash, cos we all know a bolted in cage would come loose in a big smash

saxaphone/horn type noise from engine
mrbeige replied to akz786's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Anyone got any further with this? I think I'm going to have a ferret about the VR on Sunday and see if I can determine the source. P.S. It could be one of the members of Jools Hollands rhythm and blues band, rather than Jools himself?? -
Well, it seems to be doing this more often, particularly in the wet, A broken ABS sensor wire maybe?
-
He's got a K&N drycharger on the filter, that stops any moisture/water passing through it Loving the idea though, I remember reading an article in PPC of a Pug 205 running a turbo where the back box was. very clever really, as the he didn't need an intercooler as the air running under the car did all the cooling necessary

I'd say - A load of rubbish

saxaphone/horn type noise from engine
mrbeige replied to akz786's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Well, I had a mate over today and did a bit of investigation into the source of the noise. It appears to be emanating from underneath the scuttle panel. It's definitely not coming from the engine or associated pipework. -
It's the wheel arches that made me think of one, either that or a 106 GTi

Looks like a saxo....eurgh!

Anyone?

Right, had a very odd thing happen today. Bit of background; The ABS light is currently on, and the wiring to the O/S front ABS sensor has in the past been catching on the CV gater and has worn through the wiring slightly. We were happily cruising at about 60, and all of a sudden it felt like the brakes were applied (without going anywhere near the pedal) for a couple of seconds and the ABS light went off and stayed off. Very very odd, It didn't feel like the engine died for a couple of seconds, but more like a very sharp press on the brake pedal. Anyone experienced this? Could this be the ABS

Did you have climatronic or normal AC? -
saxaphone/horn type noise from engine

Had a quick poke around the bay this morning, and the noise definitely isn't coming from the compressor itself. It's weird because you can't really hear it with you head under the bonnet with the engine running, but the missus said she could hear it from inside the house :s You can hear it clear as day inside the car though.
