    As per title really. Should the test be done with the engine hot or cold? What is the ideal average pressure to see on a vr? Is unplugging the ecu nececary when testing? Thanks Olly.

    Thanks for the replies so far. I guess my main concerns are the black smoke at low revs and the oily liquid that blows from the exhaust on initial startup, is that normal or does it indicate any possible problems?

    OK guys, Im about to take the plunge and buy me a 97 Golf VR. Its a US spec with 69,000 miles (or so it says). The car is in perfect condition on the inside and out and a very clean example. No rust ,no wear in the seats, the steering wheel, gear knob and peddals (moreso the break peddal) have a little wear but in line with the miles shown. The car has had 1 previous owner but there is no service history. The car has been modified from standard with ther usual bits like Jamex cone filter, exhaust and a chip not sure what one. The owner has the original filter and has shown me a chip about 1 in
