  1. Found it. The cable had snapped at the connecting arm on top of the gearbox. He moved it into neutral from the arm, started it up and dumped it into drive the same way and he was happy. Cheers Paul
  2. Hi All, Its been parked up for 6 months in the garage, I've decided to sell it on to someone who can deal with the head gasket so I've just moved it out of the garage ready for the guy who's just called me to come and see it. It drove out forwards just fine, it went into reverse without a hitch and now it feels like somethings come off underneath or inside the transmission because its stuck in reverse !!! arghhhh!!! Is there anything simple like a linkeage or anything outside the transmission that may have just popped off or something like that or is it all internal? I've had a look under the
  3. Hiya, Yes, the n/s/f spring wasn't seated correctly. Paul at The Phirm persuaded it in with a sizeable hammer and that was it, job done Hope that helps. Paul
  4. Thanks for all the posts and advice guys Sounds like keeping the stock shocks and sticking some GTi springs on the front end will be step one. If it doesn't work then I guess there'll be some pre-loved GTi springs going up on eBay... I'll whack a post up when I've done it and let you know the results, good OR bad
  5. Guys, thanks for all the posts I trained as a mechanical engineer when I left school but I definately fall into the 'Have A Go Hero' catagory and I've got more tools than Halfords but most are old sh*t! I've never tried anything quite a major as taking an entire engine out but how hard can it be eh?! I'm picking the engine up next weekend but I probably won't get around to doing the work for a few months yet so I want to track down a decent low mileage auto transmission or a recon one, I might as well change that whilst I'm in there, engine mounts too. I'll start hoarding hoses, HTs and all t
  6. Ello IP, Thats all makes good sense to me. I'll scope out some GTi springs and see how I fare. It's worth a try at least. Cheers Matey Paul
  7. Hi All, I'm sure there's a thread for this somewhere but I can't see it. I've just got myself another engine for my VR and I was wondering if there any instructions on how to take out the engine and put it back again? I know the easy bit, taking the front off the car, I've got access to an engine hoist and a nice garage with a pit. Are there any special tools I'll need? I'll do the engine mounts whilst I'm in there but is there anything else I should think about replacing whilst I've got the engine out? Alternatively, I've been quoted £450 all in for cash by my local garage. Cheers
  8. Hiya, This might possibly be the dumbest question on the forum. I want to replace the stock suspension on my VR. But, I don't really want to go the whole Coilover hard bumpy ride extreme. I really just want to stiffen it up a bit and get slightly better cornering out of it and make it look like its sitting right if you know what I mean. Can I just go to VW or GSF and get some new GTi spec shocks and springs? Cheers Paul
  9. Hiya, I'd like to come along to this, please count me in for Saturday night, wotsit cost, who do I pay? Cheers
  10. 1 litre per 1000 miles ... With the mileage I do it'll never need another oil change ever again! The auto is a little jittery and tends to hunt around a lower speeds, I spend most journeys selecting the gears for it just to avoid kickdown lag which works a treat. And I meant to say its emptied the sump in 1500 miles not 15000, got New Year Fat Finger Syndrome Thanks all for your replies
  11. Hiya, It's automatic so no clutch to worry about, phew I'm sure one of the Phirm reciepts was for the chain, I'll double check them. Cheers Matey Paul
  12. Hi All, HNY an all that ( My VR as just rounded the 108k mark and I was wondering if there are any things I should be looking out for in the engine at this kind of mileage? The only thing I've noticed is that it seems to be drinking oil like its got shares in OPEC! It had a monster oil leak a couple of months ago which I've sorted. I've had the whole front off the car, cleaned the engine up and underneath in the pit as much as possible and I can't see any new wet oil anywhere since then, the oil is doing a Houdini somewhere but I can't work it out. Its emptied the sump in maybe fifteen thousa
  13. Ignore what I've just sent, look at the ETKA Online post in the Sticky section of this Forum. It's not the workshop manual but it has all the exploded diagrams and part numbers. The stuff I mentioned in my first message does included tech info and servicing schedules etc.
  14. I actually just paid attention and followed the ETKA Online link in the Sticky section and found the part numbers. Cheers Matey
