  1. That's what I was thinking too Matt. If the ring was hanging out of it it'd likely be making noises too and there'd be swarf in the oil??
  2. Stupidly I didn't!! Just done the compression test. Results are as follows: 2 - 0 4 - 148 6 - 151 1 - 140 3 - 130 5 - 132 That would explain it then! Head off to see what's wrong now, have to be at a show in a fortnight and have the rest of the car to finish! |-) I hope it's a top end problem, ie a valve and not a piston ring. What's the likelyhood percentagewise?
  3. Got my engine up and running for the first today. On initial startup it spluttered for a bit as expected until fuel got up then it started revving flat out. After a couple more tries it ran as normal only off a cylinder, or so I thought....... - Checked to see if I had spark, that was ok. Also swapped leads and checked at both ends of lead. - Removed fuel rail and all injectors are spraying evenly. - Changed the plug in that particular cylinder and made no difference. - Going to try a compression test tommorrow to see if the compression in that cylinder is the same as the rest - There is a
  4. Nice build you're doing there mate! What sort of SRI is that you're using? (excuse me if you mentioned it earlier in the thread!)
  5. Yes guys, have tried 2 different MAFs and then put a new one in. Made no difference. Cheers anyway. Timing is fluctuating between 0.8 and 6.0 BTDC on idle. Don't know what it's supposed to be.
  6. Cheers, going to get a few values from vag-com first before I lift the lid off.
  7. Not sure about the timing, the thought has crossed my mind. I have the lend a jig from my local dealer to check it. Is there any way of checking it on vag-com? I'm told there is only one sensor on one of the camshafts so if it were out on the camshaft with no sensor the only way to check it is mechanically? Is this correct? Would this cause pinking as well, wouldn't have thought so myself? It's more the undrivability that is annoying me, the fact that you can't maintain a steady speed the way the throttle is hunting on and off.
  8. Cheers Jim, know what the other ones were ok. Car is OBD2 and is an original VR. I now have the car running a lot better than it was. First of all there was a boost leak where the pipe joins the throttle body, then I closed the gap to 0.5mm on the plugs and then I pushed the plug leads on tighter by slipping the metal bit on the end of the lead up a bit. It is still giving the odd miss down the revs and is impossible to hold a steady rev whilst driving at normal cruise speed, eg; 50mph at say 2500 rpm. I am getting 0.7/0.8 bar of boost but sometimes experiencing a bit of pinking around the 45
  9. I know Matt, just fishing! Any wonder you're not an early riser, still working at this hour! :-d
  10. I know mate, have vag-com and lead but can't get it to work, apparently it's incompatible with Vista unless you buy an encrypted lead from Ross-Tech! I did get it on my mates one on Sunday but the only code it fired up was engine misfire. Didi't look into it any further at that time cos we were at a show.
  11. Rough idle, lumpy and inconsistent through the rev range from around 2500/ 3000rpm on, real flat power delivery, not boosting properly, seems to be overfuelling. Idles fine with MAF disconnected and revs ok until 3000rpm as one would expect. Vortech V1 with 70mm pulley, 4"MAF, 440cc green tops, 6 branch, 4" K&N. I have replaced MAF with genuine new one, renewed the blue temp sensor, renewed the plugs with high temp ones, replaced the coilpack with another used one, new leads (500 miles ago), checked and double checked for air leaks both sides of charger, checked wiring to MAF, checked thro
  12. I have just fitted 4" MAF, 440cc Bosch Green Tops with C2 software into my VR to run along with Vortech V1 charger. The car is OBDII. On initial start up of car it runs extremely rough and will not idle and fills the garage with fumes/smoke and bad smell of petrol. It seems that the car is getting way too much fuel. Is it possible that if I have the MAF housing on the wrong way it would run this badly? Please help as I need the car to go to the last show in our season on Sunday over here in N. Ireland. I am currently on holiday and will not be back until Saturday so I'm relying on a mate to ha
