New MK3 R32 owner in need of assistance
varr6pete replied to Dil's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
May be quicker to contact the previous owner for help..... -
Final update, fixed air leak, changed coolant sensor, still no joy. Used code scanner cleared historic codes (6 or so) engine fired up straightaway and idled! these guys were a great help, plus scanner will work on other cars too!!! also reads abs, air bags, air con etc http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGT55.html

I have similar problems, did you resolve your issues?

Just purchased a U480 car diagnostic obd2 scanner as recommended by someone on this site, but just read its not for Golfs!!! Can anyone confirm this is correct. Still waiting for a reply from the supplier. Just been confirmed, this is not the one they recommend for 90's Golfs. UPDATE Have now purchased a Gendan t55, but a slip of paper included, says that if original radio is not fitted, (as radio is linked to cars diagnostics system) so may damage the scanner due to voltage going above 5 volts?. Email sent, await reply!!!!! ps Car socket - Pin 7 has 8.75 Volts with ignition on, Pin 16 has 12

Not there yet.....but have noticed my coolant sender (blue) is leaking, will need to change this anyway. Will a faulty coolant temperature sensor give the poor idling symptons. Is a VAG -Com a self contained fault reader or do I need to use software with my laptop???

Moving the battery to the rear
varr6pete replied to Timah89's topic in I.C.E, Security an Electrical
I run several cars, including a VR6. I also have a turbo'd Opel Manta, to which I moved the battery to the boot. The cable I used came from a BMW Z3...heavy duty ...just the job, ideally buy it off a private breaker, as dealers know the price of copper so charge more... -
thanks everyone for your help, managed to order a replacement pipe from somone on ebay. Will confirm its sorted once new parts are fitted!

Fink I have found the issue! the plastic intake cracked and holed by throttle body allowing air into the engine. Explains why it will run at higher revs, but not tick over. Will need a replacement, will check this out at my local VW dealer tomorrow or look for a good used one!

Mine is fitted with a LOGIC 900,(CONLOG) but only has one remote. I also bought a CONLOG dealer programmer with manual, but have not been able to program a spare remote. If anyone is breaking a car with a 900 plus 2 matching remotes I would be interested. Another question, with this alarm, do replacement ignition keys need to be chipped?

Hi Guys, my VR6 sleeper (Golf GL badge, steel wheels etc) is no longer my daily driver (replaced by 1.6 Focus!) It does not idle and cuts out. Foot on accelerator keeps engine running and ticks over just when warmer. Where shall I start looking for the fault?

Has anyone experienced a non firing spark plug due to coil pack? works ok for about 4 miles then no spark from coil pack (middle plug at back of engine). Next morning fine. Have replaced leads and plugs. Coil pack is approx 18 months old, cheaper one from GSF, willing to replace, what non VW supplier do you recommend? my understanding coil should work or not work, no inbetweens... ps its a great engine that allows you to get home on 5 cylinders....

Something else is to consider enamel paints as sold in tractor/equipment/farm suppliers...sprayed or brushed on...

ECU repair still holding up after 7 months,,,,sadly its satisfying seeing the ABS light go out each time!!!!!ps I got my abs sensors from europarts apprx £15 each, also replaced rear disc/ rings and cleaned up front rings, ....

Did you 1. Disconnect your battery to reset fault codes 2. Drive car over 15 mph to reset abs ecu? my light stayed until I carried out the above...re handbrake light, it also comes on if brake fluid is low, just temporarily disconnect the connector plug on the cap....
-
My understanding early VR6s have the abs ecu unit in the rear offside boot area...

Had same problems for about a year, ensured my sensors were clean, were replaced last year, removed ecu abs unit (see start of Finnys thread) and sent it to Stu @ star soldering, who found 5 dry joints (he has a magnifying device to see dry joints easier) plus he redone all the other power ones (see 2nd photo below) and it worked..no more abs light problems..(went out after I drove the car over 15 miles per hour which resets the ecu) well pleased. Posted it on Monday got it back Wednesday, great service for £50....try him.... http://www.starsoldering.co.uk/ Many thanks Finny for starting

painting brake calipers
varr6pete replied to andynick69's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Remove, degrease, wire brush on drill prime and spray paint with Finnigans smoothrite....... -
Took my ecu off today, did it with a hot engine and used a torx no 5...10 min job... removed cover...it looks clean to me and will be sending it to Stu at star soldering Monday...(he uses a magnifying device to look at the joints) will update you... ps my brake brake light came on the dash last week and stayed on,(operated by handbrake) so there is possible connection between the abs and the handbrake light? Brake fluid levels are ok...

Thanks

Hi Finny, just to clarify, are you saying I can remove ecu and continue using the car until ecu is fixed? Will there be any risk to the wiring, ie no receiving signals etc if used without ecu in place. I know I will have normal braking just can't be without the car at the moment, but need ecu to be resoldered...
