HARD TO GET INTO GEAR?!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Success!!! I drained the old oil and hey presto there was maybe half a tea cups worth in there! So I filled it full of fresh oil and away I went! It's going into gear fine. It does have a funny noise when it's in neutral, that stops when you press the clutch down. But it had stopped doing it when I had given it a run? -
HARD TO GET INTO GEAR?!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thanks again for the replies. I had swapped for a gearbox from a scrap yard fitted about 6 months again ago. I think it turned out to be noisier than the one in there!? Doh! I'll try the gearbox oil I guess. I think the clutch is disengaging. But we'll see!? -
HARD TO GET INTO GEAR?!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thanks for the reply. The gearbox whines a little in 2nd. It could be the clutch< but the gears arent crunching when it does go in, so i woulkd so that the clutch is disengaging?! It does stay in gear. It does seem to be in every gear. It feels like something is stopping you getting it in? Some times you can force it in, but sometimes you can't. -
I have just taken the vr for a 100mile round trip. On the way back it sarted to become hard to get into gear. The gearbox is a little noisey, so dont know if its that? Any thoughts people?

Why is this so hard!? Filter fustation.
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Tuning
Thanks dude. I've now ordered a hose. I'm pretty suprized Europerformance doesn't say that you need a hose. When other people ordered them di they come with a hose? Hopefully fitting the bad boy on saturday. -

Right, I sent back my Green Cotton panel and asked them to send me a BMC CDA, which can yesterday. I have just been to fit it and I think im missing a piece of silicon hose!? There is a fitting guide on here and it shows and says you should get a small length of hose to connect the filter to the air in take. I haven't got it!! This is doing my freakin' head in!! -

Cheers guys, I was looking at a tread where somehad drilled the shizzle out of their airbox! Surely you should only drill holes in the part of the box before the filter? Other wise you'll bypass the filter, and that surely ain't good? But as for me I think I'll bite the bullit and get me some BMC action in life. -
I have exactly that problem! Do you find that the Scorpion hangs a bit low? I dont know what to do either. Get one made or buy an off the shelf. It seems that people on here like the Milltek. I want a nicer sound thean I'm getting right now. I was a bit disapointed with the sound of the back box. Let me know what you go for. Cheers, Max

Hi y'all. I have read the thread on induction and kinda can to the conclusion that I would get a replacement panel filter and drill holes in the air box. I ordered a Pipercross from Venom, it came and it was the wrong size. They sounded a bit confused, when I rang them, and got me to measure it. It was a different size to what it said on their website. So I sent it back, and thought I would order one from somewhere else to save time. I ordered a Greencotton panel, from Europerformance yesterday. It came today, and guess what....it's the wrong freaking size!! This time it's too small.

Hi, after bashing the hell out of my sump and it beening so thin it starting to leak. I ordered a new one from VW a a cost of £100, fitted it, thought "I must be more careful now". Then I drove over some large ruts in the road, out side the steel works, where the massive lorrys cross the road. I had no time to brake!! Only time to brace myself. Well, the new sump looks just like my old sump, not leaking yet, thank god. I've looked for a sump gaurd and only found them in the USA. I heard you can fit a R32 mk5 sump and oil pick? And dad said why dont you dry sump it, like old racing Jag

Hi, I've had my VR for about 8 months now, and the ABS has never worked. My very freindly MOT man said that someone has taken the warning light bulb out!! I have toyed with the idea of removing the ABS altogether, which I still might resort to. But my local scap yard has a VR around the same year as mine. I'm thinking that I might as well see if I can fix my ABS with parts from the scappy, but I'm not sure which bits I need? The ABS pump is at the back of the engine bay. ? And I think it has a ECU of its own. ? Are they in the same unit? If not where is the ABS ECU? Any help would

Hi, after much fannying about (new water pump, new thermostat, new hose coz it split,)! I think that the head gasket has gone and is pressusising the water system. I think?? On checking the compression I'm, getting 10 bar off most the cylinders, 8 off one, 7 off another!? I'm going to bite the bullet and change the head gasket. I have read that it is good to use a mk4 gasket, it being metal and not composit. Is that a good plan? Is there a 'how to' on the gasket swap? Thanks

My VR has slipped into a coma!!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Howdy y'all, today I decided to let the car tick-over until it got nice and hot! As I can't replace the thermostat (without mucho sweat to the balls), I thought I'll just let it sit there and if it pops another hose then I'll know the thermso isn't wotking! I'm not sure if this is very sensible, running out of ideas. It did get warm, temp gauge reads normal and stays there. Didn't pop anything. But was getting steamy-ness from the exhaust and there was gunk under the oil filler cap. I am thinking the gasket has probably gone. But it didn't show up anything when I tested the compressio -
My VR has slipped into a coma!!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Me again! Well I've had an afternoon of playing with the Golf. It turns out the man didn't fit the thermostat, as he didn't know where it went. So with the new water pump in hand, and after reading a how-to, I went to work. The fitting of the pump was pretty easy really. So I went about the job of the thermostat. I didn't really know where it is was, so I went for taking the whole housing off. This is where I hit a problem. The allen bolts are a bastard to get to, so I took off the coilpack to give me a better view of things. When I came to take out the tird bolt the little bugger dec -
My VR has slipped into a coma!!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Another update dudes. IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!! Fitted the new coilpack, and hey presto...started first time. Wasn't firing on all cylinders at first but that was just a plug lead not on properly. There is now a tricking type noise coming from the other end of the engine! Also when the engine was warm, I gave the water hoses a sqeeeze and they feel pretty hard. I have a little theory that the water is knackered, and the system is pressurising as it gets hot. I have ordered a new one, but gether its a bit of hastle to get at it. Any other ideas?? -
My VR has slipped into a coma!!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Hi, just a little up date. I have had a little play with it today, beween the showers! I started off with checking the compression, most of the cylinders are getting 10 bar, one was 12 and no.2 cylinder was about 8. So I think that the head gasket is OK. All the plugs look normal and were wet with fuel (plugs are just a few months old). I then removed the coilpack (coiolpacks are new to me!! I have had a 1971 MG for ten years.) The coilpack has a few little cracks in the plastic. I also took the back off, there is a bit of oil leaking out. So I have ordered a new one. There wasn't loads -
My VR has slipped into a coma!!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thanks people. I'm still in bloomin' Croydon working, so can't play with it my self. My little mechanic man has firred the new hose and thermosat. He said on the phone that it wouldn't start. also that the yellow light came on on the dash?? It's turning over but not firing at all. The hose did split right under the coilpack (if thats what the HT leads are plugged into), and was spirted everywhere. Im hoping that it's just the water stopping it start. If the coilpack is cracked should I buy a new one? It frustrating not being able to try and start it myself, but I'll be back by it's sic -
My VR has slipped into a coma!!
kaptainkernow replied to kaptainkernow's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
The engine is turning over but no sign of firing. There was no water in when it was trired. Just to add- when it burst the pipe the temp gauge was reading normal. Any ideas why it might of popped the hose? Thanks. -
I started my journey from Cardiff to Croydon, hit slow moving traffic by Newport, then steam!! Lots of it. Pulling off the motorway asap, and stopped. A little look under the bonnet and could see a split in the top hose (from the rad, to the thermostate housein). I've had a little man fit a new hose, and thermostat, but he now says it won't stat! Has it got a sensor that will it stop it starting if that is no water in the system? The mechanic said he tryed to start it with out water in. I'm hoping I didn't cook the engine! A

Hi, In an effort to making my VR sound a bit nicer, I fitted a Scorpian back box, and it didn't really give me the growl I was after. The exhast is looking a bit tired so I'm thinking I will get a new system. I don't know if i should get one made by my local Longlife exhast place, or buy one? I spoke to someone at Demon Tweeks and he said, "Longlife use universal silencers, wouldn't you prefer buying a system that has been designed for your specific car". I just wonder if he is right? A silencer is just different in bore size and flow, isn't it? Oh, and also should I get rid of the CAT?

Hey guys, just a little up-date. Last weekend i fitted a set of Apex coilovers, and lowered the little fella as much as I could! After I had removed the rear struts, and taking the spring off the shock, testing the near-side shock, I found that the shock was knacked! It mush have been making the corner the car to bounce under heavy braking. I haven't had much chance to give it much of a run, but it seems to be pulling up nice and true. Having said that the ABS light doesn't come on, when I turn on the ignition. Still need a Vag-com session. Cheers dudes.

After a couple months 'mmmm and aaahing' what to do...should i get coilovers, should I get springs and shocks? How much do I spend? Is that a gearbox noise? Should I be sending over half the cost of the car on making it low!? Why do my farts smell like catfood today?......I finally thought 'YES!! Wiectec spring and shock kit from Europerformance. £330 for lowing 50mm/30mm, can't be bad...but then found that it said 'not suitable for vr6 with air con'. Is this right? If so, what can I use and which part for the air con gets in the way? Any help would be great! Cheers

After chatting to a guy in a paint shop and a reply on here, I'm starting to think that the judder is being caused by a knackered shock on the back. The VR sometimes gets a bit 'skittery' when going round a corner and hitting a bump. But I still think the ABS is not right too. I don't really know what route I want to go down with the suspension, to coilover or not to coilover? That is the question! And I don't really know how low I want to go. I was looking at the Avo coilies, from Europerformance. Any good?
