Camshaft sprockets, which way?
MikeJVV replied to MikeJVV's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Managed to bash a socket on the intermiate and get it off. Cheers -
Is it a good idea to have the flywheel lightened when you are building a VRT or not? And has anyone done it? On a N/A i can see it being a good idea to make it more revy, but on a VRT would it be over kill?
-
Are they reverse threaded to remove? Or not? Putting the upper timing chain on an engine in my garage and the last owner has chewed the bolt that holds the intermidiate sprocket, so i want to remove the cam shaft sprocket to get the chains on. Obviously its torqued on hard and i presumed it would be reverse threaded, so clockwise to undo? Or am i mistaken. Anyone? Mike

Could do dude, im going to give it a go tomo and see what i can use around the garage. But if not that would be an awesome help!

Prefer to get dirty and have a bit of fun, cant wait to get the VR turbo running! haha. Although i did chequebook my paint work... lol 115bhp 8v to 280bhp+ Ha....good times.

Yeah, i think i will sort it out by the end of the week. When we were stripping the engine down aaron just wacked out his premium on his phone to find a guide about something we were taking apart. This forum is amazing, so much more informative that others, and actually has members that have done things, rather than just making it up....

That could work! At the moment im making something out of my national insurance card a few other random cards in my wallet. But a C spanner could work, mine is fairly thick but wil give it a shot! Need to buy premium membership on here soooo bad.

Im in for this.

Cheers dude. Think you said you should be coming to an eastcoastdubs meet soon if you can? I go to all of them, and i am buiding it with aaron? He said today that he had been over yours to collect some bits. Will definetly take you up on the offer when i start dumping the engine in the car and need to work out where to put bits. Cheers mate Get along to east coast dubs, good people

Yeah, im toying with not putting the ARP bolts in, and running less than 300bhp. And then maybe fitting new arp bolts with a cam and pairing up the job etc. Hmmm never mind, the build goes on!!! Really need to start a build thread on here too. ha
-
Yeah, thats not too much of a problem, i understand that totally, and how to time the engine. Its just that nowhere talks about timing an engine if you havnt set the head to tdc1 before removing it, and i didnt realise the cam tool only fits one way. Im currnelty making a home made cam locking tool from bits and bobs, ha!
-
Yeah thought as much, really shouldnt have been sooo gun ho today! Ha.

Ok. Would i still be able to use the head gasket that i have fitted today? Baring in mind the engine wont have ran. Unsure on if once a headgasket has been fitted one and bolted down, if it can be used again?
-
Is it ok to swap them one by one with the standard bolts, without removing the head? The engine has had a new head gasket on and a C2 spacer today, but i didnt have the arp bolts to fit when the head came off but wanted the engine back together to paint etc. The engine wont be running between fitting the new bolts and now but didnt know if it would damage the seal with the gasket by removing and swapping the bolts one by one at a later date.

You are lifesafer! Cheers dude.
