looks like I've managed to sort out the problem, wasn't the fan control module, it turns out it was the ac thermal switch which is the 4 pin brown switch in the water housing on the front rhs of the block which was obviously reading wrong so was engaging the radiator fans onto speed 3 and not allowing the a/c clutch to engage due to thinking the water temp was too high. Thanks for any help, hope this helps someone else (i tested it by unplugging said switch and the rad fans operated as they should)

have potentially got the wrong fan control module on the car does anyone know the part number for a '96 vr6 highline please?

thanks for the replies, i've got a code reader but not vagcom and that doesn't help, it was gassed just before we realised it's not engaging and yes i've tried it on each number in the car and set it to cold. Having read through my Bentley manual it seems to go through loads of switches and controls before getting to the AC pump. I've checked it's got a good earth, I don't want to separately wire it up as i guess there is something wrong with the system hence it's not functioning properly

Hi everyone, been a while since I've been on here mainly cos some idiot pulled across me while i was doing nearly 40mph and wrecked my black golf vr...nice. I've recently replaced it with a mulberry vr6 highline that ive had a few issues with (rad fan control module mainly) latest issue is that the air con clutch is not engaging. If i direct feed it from the battery it engages. The fuse is fine and i've got continuity to the fan control module and i've tried the one that was previously on the car. Anyone got any suggestions please? Switch seems to be working ok and still nada. It's a p plate o

hello mate, no i meant rad fan as i stated. You could get new heater fan off another mk3 doesn't matter which one, be under dash on passenger side, may as well change as wd40 probably won't cure for long

Hi everyone, I've a 97 vr6 highline with aircon and the only real problem i've got is a really noisy radiator fan, is it right there are 3 speeds on the rad fans? I had a replacement fan come with the car (which made me think there'd be an issue) but when i changed it it's made very little difference (worse if anything). Is it likely to be the rad fan control module? As soon as it gets up to temp (about 75 degrees the fan proper kicks in and it always stays LOUD, anyone had any experience of this please?

Hi everyone, i've just replaced my written off Vr6 with a highline and was just wondering if they had more power standard as this seems a bit quicker than my last one, both OBD2 and not much between them on mileage etc. My previous one was rolling roaded at 176.6 bhp so was no slouch, just curious.

thanks for the help, i have thought about getting a handheld code reader but don't know if they're any good. I'm sure you can't kill a lambda sensor in a week? Is it possible the coil pack could cause this sort of problem?

Hi everyone, my first post am really hoping for some help please. Basically, had my golf vr6 (96N) for about a year and have had very few problems with it, until about a month ago. First mot check on emissions it was at 12% Co!!!! It had only been running badly for about a week in which time I had changed the blue ECT sensor (genuine one) and it had a new lambda sensor a couple of months previous. After a bit of discussion with the garage, they had suggested a cat, an air mass sensor, a lambda sensor......yeah i'd replace all that if they're paying for it, and they hadn't done a diagnostic!
