  1. By the way, sorting out the connector is much easier when you have the right tool. The Laser tool I bought worked perfectly, much better than tweezers, sharpened screwdrivers, windscreen wiper inserts (yes really!) etc - ask me how I know... Think this cost me about 8 quid: Here's a link to one like mine: [link]http://www.lasertools.co.uk/item.aspx?cat=524&item=3175 Cheers
  2. With the two cut-outs uppermost on the plug, and the metal spring clip lower, looking from the back of the plug (ie where the wires enter it), the colours are: from LEFT to RIGHT: brown with yellow stripe brown with blue stripe red with blue stripe red This is for an OBD1 engine Sorry for the blurry cameraphone shot! HTH!
  3. A quick question about this mod which I've read about in other places. I understand the idea that the IAT gets heat-soaked in the inlet manifold and tends to read about 20C all the time after the engine's been running a while. I also understand that the 1.8T sensor has an 'open' element, but I'm not sure why this wouldn't get heat-soaked too - isn't the Mk3 one just covered with a plastic cap which surely won't get soaked too much (plastic isn't much of a heat sink is it?). I also read that the 1.8T version gives instant readings, but surely that's down to the ECU not the sensor (which is just
  4. Actually I hadn't but just read it now. As it happens, just been offered some OZ Ultra's at a stupid price by a guy at work so probably go that way. Thanks for the thought though! Looking forward to seeing (and hearing!!) you at Inters...
  5. Brilliant Tony, just what I needed! BTW thanks for a very smooth purchase the other day - a nice bloke to deal with! Rich
  6. Hi there, I'm about to fit my 'new' VGI (thanks Tony!) and have a question about the wiring. I've wired up an OBD1 twice before without any problems, but the OBD2 ECU harness doesn't have the thick red/blue wire used on the OBD1. Almost all the guides on the 'net are about OBD1 and suggest that wire, so not relevant to me. The only OBD2 guide I can find is VENOM, which suggests a connector for a wiper relay - which mine doesn't have (it's a Mk2 VR6 conversion). Anyone remember or know where their power wire is tapped into for the control box? I've got the other two sorted but this is bugging m
  7. I can second this about the grille. I'm running normally aspirated, with a BMC intake. Thought I'd remove the grille to increase airflow a bit but can't say I noticed any difference in performance. What I did notice was that after I'd driven in a 'spirited' fashion, there would be a MAF (Short to B+) error stored sometimes. I didn't put 2 and 2 together for a while (was a long time between removing it and VAGCom'ing it), but when I eventually put the grille back on, no further problems. I suspect the problem would be even worse on FI applications. Strangely, I never saw this on the OBD1 cars I
  8. Just put some in my new VR (Mk2) which had about 137000 on the clock and the piston crowns were really black and crinkly. After running a tank through, the idle is definitely smoother, starting a tad quicker too. Haven't looked down the plug holes since but I'm sure it's done some good.
  9. I've found out that this contains PEA (polyether amine) which is the stuff that seems to work. The cheaper ones (like Redex) are just kerosene and aren't great in my experience. I haven't used STP myself but I have used Comma D-Tox (which also has PEA) and I saw it change a black, carbon covered piston crown into a nearly spotless one in just one tank of fuel. The idle smoothed out considerably and mpg went up a bit. All in all, for something you just pour into the tank, I was VERY impressed. BTW D-Tox is in Halfords for £6 at the moment instead of £15 - happy days!!
  10. Sorry can't help but just want to say keep going. The Schrick turned my car into the VR6 I'd hoped for - couldn't believe the improvement in driveability and mpg. Ok, it's no super/turbocharger but it still put a big smile on my face!
  11. Managing to resist making jokes about handling your sloppy knob (doh!), I used the following guide to help me adjust mine (which was tight over to 1st/2nd with lots of play over to 5th). I don't know if it'll help with 'sloppiness' but it only took me about 15 minutes so it's worth a go! http://www.houseofthud.com/shifting_gti.htm Good luck
  12. Hi all, 00281 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (G68) 03-00 - No Signal This code comes up on my Mk2 VR6, along with a carbon canister code (it's not connected so not a problem) and occasional "blocked by immobilizer" (chip is still in Mk3 key so have to hold near ignition barrel - sometimes miss!). I think this is the sensor on the gearbox isn't it -not the camshaftor crankshaft sensors; it's not that the engine isn't running - it's OBD2 and it happens after a run sometimes. So what does it do on a manual car? I haven't seen any problem with the speedometer, the power feels OK, it doesn't stall and idle
