  1. Thanks, will do. Just need a pic now as I'm sure something is missing in the boot.... some kind of bracket or mounting clip or something!
  2. Could someone do me a favour and post up a picture of how the central locking pump is mounted in the boot. When I got my golf it was hanging out and I've tried a few time but just can't see how its meant to be mounted neatly. Also, I'm guessing I've got a leak somewhere as when you unlock the car the pump runs on for a good while but does eventually switch off, during this time the lock pins are solid. Trouble is this only happens maybe 50% of the time. Is there anything else I should check for or any common failures to check for before I start ripping the whole thing out to find out whats wha
  3. Well another forum has kindly told me that the difference in height between block and lower cover is normal and my old friend "Mr Instant Gasket" will be needed to fill it. Hope that helps any other souls out there who come accross the same problem.
  4. Changing the head gasket today on the VR6 and found a pretty prolific oil leak down the gearbox side of the engine. Seems to be coming from the timing chain covers. After removing the head I noticed that the housing for the lower chain is sitting a fraction lower then the block, around 0.5mm. worried this is causing the leak. was thinking of trying to move up the case but ran out of light. can I remove this with dropping the box? only other option was to either use a section of the old gasket? or may gasket card or instant gasket? What do you guys think? If so what options do I have? Also, on
  5. Well a quick look on etka brings up this 357 919 369 E the part number you have seems to be for the black sender if you have a 3 stage fan. Hope thats of some help
  6. The car was standing over night and cold so surely it shouldn't be holding pressure in the cooling system. Plus when she is running you can't compress the cooling hoses which means the exhaust gases are trapped. Just typical luck for me... just when I really need my car is decided to get sick!
  7. Isn't the yellow when the switch for the cooling fans? The black one is only on cars with the 3 stage if I remember as my one only has the two stage fan and it only has blue and yellow temp sensors.
  8. Well, I checked it again this morning and its pouring out! Had to top her up with 1.5ltr of coolant. The final nail in the coffin was a check of the water hoses, hard as bricks and a massive whoosh of pressure when removing the expansion cap. Think I summed it up this morning in a word... Bugger! Ordered a new gasket from VW spares so its time to get grubby. real pain is I have to be in Kendal on Monday so looks like I'll be hiring a car!!
  9. Need a bit of help guys. Was checking the oil and water today and spotted what looks like a water leak coming from the left hand side of the engine (Auxilary belt side) at the head gasket! haven't seen or found any other signs of it blowing and the car is running fine, not overheating at all. Getting worried that its on its way out but I'm not sure. whats everyone elses thoughts on this? How easy a job is this to do on the VR, done a few in my time but none involving timing chains, will i need any special tools?
  10. No luck for me either... I work at heights by the way, I'm an Industrial rope access technician so I have to good with them I suppose!
  11. I know that feeling D@VeR6! Had the new VR6 golf less then a month and the list of repairs goes on and on! I swear, If someone tells me one more time that "wouldn't it be nice if everything in life was as reliable as a VW" I'll punch them right in the stomach!
  12. I'd change the thermostat housing as well if your doing all that as its failed on both VR I've had! one ended with a warped head and my current one was bodged with instant gasket to seal the cracks!! Ebay is a good source. As previous stated, don't go the low twmp thermostat route as it won't allow your vr to warm up to its correct running temp and engage the warm map and svae you fuel. They do a lower temp rad switch though which isn't such a bad idea for when your stuck in traffic.
  13. knocks and bangs on suspension are a nightmare to find! You need to get under the car and have a good old pull about! Places to check, wishbone bushes, anti roll bar links , ball joints and top mounts. check for wear and excess movement.
  14. Its your thermostat stuck open, just fixed this on my VR6 with the exact same problem. Gazbarber, you should have a read of this mate... http://the-corrado.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=68720 Those low temp thermostats really arn't a good idea mate. Your car can't heat up and engage the correct map so your burning more fuel. The low temp fan switch on the other hand is a good investment.
