  1. Cheers Craggsy. I didn't do the alternator as it happens. A garage relieved me of around £800 before I got my garage and tools sorted!!! Any advice on doing it? Any gen on this specific M8 threaded bolt?
  2. HI all, My Golf VR6 Highline has just started this strange whining sound that gets louder and more high pitched as rpm increases. The car has done 127k and will probably (all being well) do another 3500 miles before the engine comes out for timing chains replacement, clutch and other opportunity bits. Initially, as the alternator was done less than 5k ago thought this must be either the power steer pump or aircon pump as they are on the same belt. However, I have come across a thread on here to do with the serpentine tensioner pulley??!! Now I'm confused! Also, I'm working away during the week
  3. Ok got a few more pressing problems now but I will re-attack this when I get chance. Thanks calico
  4. Ok guys. bad news is that checking with a multi meter shows it is getting at least 12v. so bad earth you say? How do i go about tackling this one then? Cheers all
  5. Thanks for that. i will try and have a look during the week but i suspect it'll be the weekend. i will keep you posted with what i find. cheers jay
  6. HI there everyone, I find myself in need of some expertise again. 97 R Mk3 VR6 Highline Rear wiper motor had failed but wash jet still operated only not much water was ejected from nozzle. Upon removal (and reading a fair bit on the internet) it was obvious that the nozzle was broken and leaked inside the motor. First port of call was to GSF for a replacement and at the time thought ~£70 was a bit dear and found plenty on eBay for a lot less. Long story short and 3 motors later (all the nozzles were snapped and "sold as seen") , I bought one from GSF. Problem now is that I get a strong jet of
  7. Hi all, First real post although been a member for nearly a yr and used the site for lots of info, so thanks to everyone for all the info on here. So, I have a 97 R Golf VR6 Highline, in pretty good condition and I want to keep it fairly standard but as I've had it nearly a yr I've seen the need for some slight improvements. I love the car, the way it sounds and goes. In my opinion I would like to do something to the handling (front end), braking too maybe. Looking for a new (MOT friendly) exhaust, induction kit or panel filter, spark plugs and leads if better than standard. Basically I want t
  8. I'm near Hook. How does it come off then? It seems seized, I've soaked it in allsorts including WD40 and tried some adjustment with a hammer as I'm not keeping the disc. I'm leaving it until next weekend so I'll post a picture then unless anyone has any brainwaves. Cheers Bungy though
  9. Ok everyone, as part of my tlc/service (this car is really trying my patience now) trying to change pads and discs. The guide on here was very useful up until the point to pull the disc off. After removing the disc retaining screw I have been unable to force the disc off. The only thing that remains is to take off the self locking 12 point nut which I'm presuming is for holding the hub on with. This is the first time I have come across this with changing discs and pads. Any suggestions? If it works, below should be 2 screenshots from ElsaWin. Lower image item 2 is the 12 point. Many thanks guy
  10. ok sweet, just tested it again now. Just to throw another one in there! The battery had held it's charge overnight (actual shock!) and car started. The alternator was producing 13.5V, I was most confused, so I took it for a quick drive. When I came back I tested it again and same thing so I thought I'd put it under high load. I put on pretty much everything electrical I could think of. This led to the alternator having a low output of 13V. I am quite confused now. Any thoughts?
  11. Many thanks Pete, looks like alternator change is next. Is it safe enough to assume that you should replace it with the same one? My point is GSF do a lot of different ones. I'm still going to have a Bosch one
  12. Hi all, I've not long bought my VR6, It's a 97 R Highline and it needs some work doing to it but not huge amounts. Biggest nause I have at the moment is that the battery doesn't seem to hold it's charge. My thought was maybe the alternator is on it's way out but the battery light doesn't come on on the dash for this to be the case. Next up I bought from GSF a laser voltage, battery, alternator checker. It keeps thing simple for people like me who are electrically challenged! So, with a fully charged battery the checker says it's all good. Start the engine and @ 2000rpm it's producing between 1
