So finally at the stage where it's time to remove the engine. Never done anything like this before, except a gear box on a mk2 golf. So thought I'd ask if there are any tips you guys have? Any snags you've came across when removing an engine? Do feel like a bit of an amateur asking but feel the only way to learn is to give it a go!

Noise from wheel/brakes
Cooz93 replied to dom.joy's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
Might sound stupid, but are your discs on the right way? Have read that with some grooved discs if they are rotational and on the wrong way, they make a similar noise.. -
That would make my life alot easier. Cheers

Bit of a bargain! Did you get the upper timing cover? If so have you got a pic? Not 100% sure what I'm looking for, also then tensioner? Unless you won't need to change it because your already coilpack? Cheers:)

So would you say £300 all in is a deal? I'm guessing the manifold would be £100 on its own? Ecu £50? Loom £50? Then the airbox maf etc. Seems an alright deal?
-
Unsure about the manifold, think anywhere that has them in stock ran out a while ago. Try using the search function for your camshaft question, there's a few threads on best cams. Drc 268 cams are liked by a lot if people. But if you ask most people on here they will recommend SP(schimmel) 263 cams.. A little bit more expensive but we'll tested and trusted

Alright.. Found a guy selling an obd2 conversion kit What it has.. Ecu (021 906 256) Loom of some kind. Poss engine. Transponder and key Maf housing, airbox etc Engine cover Belt tension(guessing bolt?) Inlet manifold and throttle body However he says the manifold is from a 2.9 vr6 synchro? But still says it's obd 2? And also when looking at conversion guide that ecu number doesn't come up? It seems like he has all that I need, but will it all work?

New rear brake lines arrived, so got them fitted. They seem a little short, but the fit, and since they are fixed at both ends it shouldn't be a problem. Just need some new abs sensors and it will be good to go.. Also started on the front end. Took the struts, hubs and wishbones off. Will clean, paint and give the hubs new bearings as they are a bit rusty. Also going to do the Cv joints while the driveshafts are out, which I'll also clean up.
-
Qaulity mate cheers for that:)
-
Hi guys. Bought a cv joint kit for my mk3, from eurocarparts and had these two washers in the pack. When I took the old cv off there was nothing similar there. Anyone done a cv recently? Circled the two items I'm on about..

I can't see why it won't he straight forward. Changing basically everything engine control wise. Hopefully I can source one now that isn't crazy expensive and has all bits on it! Will update if I do:) Cheers!
-
Was it just a case of plug and play after that then? Just swap out the engine harness and ecu etc? Might be wrong, but is it true the obd2 cars produce slightly more power?
-
Would it be easier to get an obd2 doner engine and swap over the engine, loom etc? The engine in the car was coming out for a rebuild and clean anyway?
-
Cheers guys! Next up will be front brakes. Unsure if I should go 986 2.7 4 pots on a 312mm discs and run 16" wheels. Or go all out and get a porsche cayenne/toureg/q7 set up and run r32 discs with 17" wheels? Opinions? Edit. Decided to go 986 frons on a 313mm disc. Easier set up, easier to find parts, and 16" tyres are cheaper. Ordering them next month:)

Set up complete and fitted.. Any questions drop me a pm and I'll do my best to help:)
-
Get a full Tt/mk4 1.8t or mk4 4 motion set up. Easy fit, just need longer caliper carrier bolts and possibly a spacer to bring the caliper out from the hub. About 5-6mm. I had them fitted with some banded steel and there were no issues. Will need banjo type brake lines if your car has 280mm brakes as standard. Or just use the originals if it has the later 288mm calipers.. Item 281675349291 on ebay would do the job.. Hope that helps:)

Any luck with this? Will be needing to buy some soon too

Thought I'd add this in hear before starting a new thread. Looking to remove the fuel tank on the car. How difficult is this? Awkward? Anyone had any advice
-
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I'm about 550 miles away from Surrey haha! What stage are you at with your build?
-
Thanks for the reply! There isn't any rust visible, still to have a poke about. The arches are covered in a light layer of grit/mud. I think they would clean up easy enough. Unfortunately I don't have access to a jet wash at my lock up, or power for that so can't give it a good scrub. Will have a look at that website. Cheers mate:)

Hi guys. As my cars in bits and access to the underside and inside arches is pretty easy. I was thinking about giving them a coat of underseal. What sort of prep work would I have to do? Will I need to buff it back of is there stuff that can go straight on? Floor is pretty clean and dirt free, arches have a little bit if light grit coating.. Any input appreciated

Thought I'd give this an update. Finally got the rear beam and suspension all back together. Also mocked up the new rear brake setup but forgot I needed small spacers on the bolts, so the caliper currently fouls the disc. Will sort it next time:) few pics..

Readily available on ebay mate.140348061351 pretty sure I bought the ones like these

Was meaning the ecu work, immobiliser and socketed as I plan on doing the conversion myself too:) You had a look to see how difficult changing over the harnesses will be? Also decided what management your going to run with your turbo set up?
