Bit of an update I started fitting the 19 row mocal oil cooler which is done now. It's not in the best position as it will mostly be covered by the radiator but I'm hoping it will still do its job but if it doesn't then I will have to have another think. I was limited on where I could put it because of the space available and the lengths of the hoses. Adjustable fuel pressure regulator is in place now and fuel lines connected.

Engine is back in the bay now. Woohoo! Took a bit of work and I am glad I had 2 extra pairs of hands helping me. I had to unbolt the turbo to make it easier as the engine was not level on the hoist. Driveshaft's are connected up. Back at it tonight to get it completed as soon as possible as I have booked myself in for a remap at Stealth on the 23rd December. Oh yea I wrapped my downpipe also...

Hopefully back to work on getting the engine back in the bay tonight. I did attempt to do it the other day but found a bracket near the rear engine mount which had 3 cable plugs on it and I could not figure out where it went and my mate who took it off was not around. I know now though after doing a search on google. Apart from that also got some more bits delivered today... Oil catch can which I had powdercoated to match the rocker cover and short intake Sytec adjustable fuel pressure regulator. It would not have been required but as I replaced my OEM fuel rail with a billet one it does

If it were a Saturday I would probably come down in the afternoon to meet you guys. Doubt I would put my car on the rollers as it should be going to Stealth before Xmas anyway to get mapped. -
Faultless seller. Bought some rear lights, they were dispatched promptly and very well packaged. Good job mate and thanks again

Nice! Looking good mate. My turbo does not sit as high up as yours. I was thinking of putting an elbow on the top of my turbo and having the boost pipe run across the rocker cover diagonally if there is enough room to do that while still being able to close the bonnet. If not then it will have to be a longer run around the left side of the engine I think.

I can't remember off the top of my head but the rods came with ARP bolts and they tell you on their website what to do them to. OEM bolts would be slightly different.

Getting nearer and nearer to completion guys and getting more and more excited. Engine is pretty much ready to go back in just needed to change my alternator pulley but didn't have a socket big enough to take the nut off. Will be doing that tomorrow aswell as changing the engine mounts and then that's it get the engine back in the bay.

Yes they are. It makes things even more simpler with a Bentley manual by your side.

Good question mate and the answer is I have absolutely loved every bit of it! I have learnt so much along the way and I now know how an engine actually runs. The worst bit is waiting anxiously for parts to arrive. I would do it all ever again any day though. Already thinking about my next project. I've got a A3 1.8t Quattro running around 280bhp so I want to take the engine out of that and possibly put it into my other mk3 or look for a mk1 golf as I absolutely love them.

Got to work with fitting the new clutch yesterday. Lightened flywheel mounted with new bolts as recommended and tightened to 60Nm plus a 1/4 turn. And then the clutch held in with the centering tool which was supplied with it. Can't wait to test this badboy out!

Haven't updated in a few days but I've basically just been putting the auxiliaries back on the engine. I wish I had got the alternator housing and belt tensioner powdercoated as they are letting the engine down a bit. Siemens Deka 630cc injectors are in and the fuel rail mounted. Not sure what I'm doing for a fuel pressure regulator yet will probably think about that when the engine is back in the bay. Finally got my Clutch Masters FX400 delivered today after waiting 3 weeks for it...

I'll just leave this here [emoji6]

I'm not going to use the oem one. The Mocal one should be more than man enough for the job. I went for the 19 row with the thermostat.
-
That's if it ever gets finished! At this rate it will be next year by the time it's done.

Just received a delivery of some more bits...

I think the ones shown with the sandwich plate in front of the original oil cooler are on gti's. Plus the threaded bolt supplied with my kit is nowhere near long enough to do that,

Did a bit more tonight. Schimmel 263 cams are in. Couldn't get one of the sprockets off the old cam. Ended up breaking my own 1/2 x 3/8 adaptor and my mates snap on one! Decided to go and see if any of the garages would be open still and found a guy who was still open at 9.30 at night and he manged to get the bolt undone. Great result! Didn't bother going back to my lockup though as I had already put everything away. But also managed to get my bottom chain in so tomorrow I should be able to get the top chain done.

Ok so did a bit of searching and also spoke to Poriordan on here and have confirmed the old oil cooler gets taken off completely. The pipe coming off the block and the other pipe that gets connected to the crack pipe can get joined together or you can remove them both completely and cap off the connections.
-
I thought the original oil cooler gets removed completely. Can anyone else confirm which way is correct.
-
Need some help guys. I was having a look at the old oil cooler and the new mocal cooler I will be fitting and have noticed on the old oil cooler there was a pipe coming off the block going on to it as marked in the picture below. Now the question is what do I do with this pipe once I fit the mocal oil cooler sandwich plate as it does not have a connection for this pipe.

3 likes for silver. So silver it is then!

So the head has been put back on. Torqued in three stages, 40Nm, 80Nm and then 109Nm. Still trying to decide weather to paint the head black or leave silver. What do you guys think? Quick pic of the rocker cover placed on top just to see what it looks like:

Got round to doing a bit more on the car last night. Started off with cleaning off the top of the pistons. Should have really done that while the pistons were off but hey ho! Then put in the ARP headbolts into the block. Next got out 1 of the headgaskets which I bought 2 of and realised that its a 3 part head gasket. Wish Vince had told me that! I would not have needed to buy 2. So I separated the sections and put on the bottom section then my spacer plate and then the top section of the head gasket. Pistons before: Pistons after plus headbolts on:
